Dedication
From Darlene Olivia McElroy
To Dave, my dear husband and ballast. To my wonderful brother, Mike, who has supported my art endeavors and encouraged me to follow my creative dreams. And to my little sister, Denise, who I lost in 2010 and will always miss.
From Sandra Duran Wilson
To Mark, my wonderfully talented and creative husband: I thank you for keeping me inspired and living life in full spectrum color. To all the young artists just beginning to choose their paths: Live your dreams and hold them dear; they are precious.

About the Authors
Sandra Duran Wilson is an artist and a scientist. She loves looking at the world from many perspectives. When she was a little kid, she would stand on her head and look at the world upside down; today when she wants a new perspective, she still does this.
Sandra was deeply influenced by her early years growing up near the border of Mexico, listening to the family stories and painting with her great aunt, Santa Duran. Her travels and studies with indigenous healers have also influenced her work. She has both a fine art degree and a science degree from the University of New Mexico, both which provide the foundation for her explorations and experiments in art.
Sandras home and studio are in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and she collaborates in art, love and life with her husband and feline friends.
Darlene Olivia McElroy comes from an old New Mexico family of storytellers and artists. She began making art the first time she found a wall and a drawing instrument. Her grandfather, a painter on Catalina Island, was her mentor and taught her to play and experiment with art.
Darlene attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and then worked as an illustrator both in the United States and in Paris. The influence of her background and her travels is evident in her work.
She lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and creates new life stories with her husband, Dave, and their four dogs, Oso, Taco, Bernie and Zola.

Introduction
While a blank canvas holds all the possibility in your creative world, surface textures offer an inspirational way to begin a piece of artwork. Whether you are painting, sculpting, are interested in paper or are into mixed-media, the forty-five techniques in this book will give you a basis for making art youll enjoy creating and will love to look at (and in some cases, touch). The concept of this book was borne from our first book, Image Transfer Workshop. In it, the backgrounds we created for the image transfer techniques intrigued our students, who wanted to learn the background techniques we had used. We were (and continually are) energized by their enthusiasm, which, in turn, sparked this creative journey.
We think the strong point of this book is learning the techniques and then combining them to create a unique surface that has both history and mystery. People will wonder how you did that instead of instantly identifying the method. Some of the techniques we tried were pretty wild. The Shaving Foam technique (page 84) was goofy and fun, and the Pulled Paper technique (page 50) had us singing the
