ARRANGER NOTES
What an experience this has been, to arrange many of the most beloved songs of the last century songs that shaped my childhood and that have affected countless millions worldwide. The opportunity to retell them, in a way personal to me, has been pure artistic joy. I must also mention the inspiration I felt from Disneyland, my all-time favorite place to visit.
Honestly, I have more fun there than most five-year-olds. Its a magical location to me. This book is really an extension of that feeling the magic of Disney, expressed through music. Mary Poppins: Mary Poppins ties with Beauty and the Beast as my No. 1 Disney musical. This was a joy to arrange.
I especially like the ragtime version of Jolly Holiday; it makes me think of the fun ragtime players on Main Street, USA in Disneyland, so I loved the idea of portraying a great Disney classic in this form. And Feed the Birds (Tuppence a Bag)/Chim Chim Cher-ee are so inspiring I had to both start and end the medley with them. Beauty and the Beast : Ill admit I nearly cried while working on this arrangement; thats how much I love this movie. In striving to create the most epic medley imaginable, I devised an alternate ending for advanced players that incorporates all the piano techniques I use as a concert performer. I also reprised the Prologue theme in the end, like the climactic moment when the beast turns back into the prince. I get chills every time I play it! The Jungle Book : This one turned out to be the books most fun surprise for me.
After I finished the main arrangement, I suddenly had this idea for a reprise of The Bare Necessities in a slow, 1940s swanky vibe. It makes me laugh every time I play it, just to picture Baloo and the rest of The Jungle Book characters with all their personality. With some other arrangements, I strove to balance out the folio with true intermediate pieces not quite as challenging as the rest, but still fun and unique to provide opportunity for younger players to enjoy the book. I think that, regardless of your playing level, youll like them.
