The Sheepadoodle is a mixed-breed dog, a hybrid of the Old English Sheepdog and the Standard Poodle. While this mix was originally developed in the 1960s as a military dog, it wasnt until the early 2000s that the dogs gained popularity with the mainstream public. Most Sheepadoodles inherit the sturdy build and fun-loving, goofball temperament from their Old English Sheepdog side, and their exceptional intelligence, easier-to-care-for coat, and desire to be the center of attention from their Poodle side. The combination of the two results in a canine companion that is entertaining, intelligent, and easygoing.

    Breed History

    What is a Sheepadoodle?

One walk down the street with a Sheepadoodle will turn heads from all directions. This undeniably adorable crossbreed will lift the spirits and light up the faces of all who lay eyes on it. Part old English sheepdog and part poodle, these fluff balls with giant hearts get the best of both breeds to create some of the best family dogs around.

    History of the Sheepadoodle

A lthough the Sheepadoodle has only recently gained popularity and attention throughout households around the world, dont discount this crossbreeds interesting origin and history. First bred by the U.S. military in the 1960s, this dog was the product of an experiment searching for a good military police dog. While Sheepadoodles proved to be intelligent and obedient, they are better suited to fami ly and therapy jobs.

Although these dogs have existed since the 1960s, they only recently made a name for themselves as a common household pet around the year 2007. The popularity of Sheepadoodles boomed after receiving media attention from celebrity figure skaters, Meryl Davis and Fedor Andreev, in 2015, reaching p eak numbers in 2017.

To better understand the Sheepadoodle, its helpful to explore the origins of the parent breeds from which this lovabl e cross is derived.

About the Poodle The standard poodle is a rough, curly-coated, water dog that originated in Germany. Poodles were originally bred to be water retrievers and are still sometimes used for that purpose today. Highly intelligent, poodles are easily trainable and very attuned to their humans, making e xcellent companions.

Contrary to the way they are depicted in pop culture, poodles are not aloof. While they can be wary and occasionally aggressive with strangers, poodles typically adore being the center of attention and will happily choose two-legged companionship over ti me with another dog.

About the Old English Sheep Dog It is thought the old English sheepdog originated in England in the early 19th century, but that is not known for certain. This breed is energetic and playfulwhat some would call a fun-loving goofball. Very intelligent, these dogs learn quickly and have been used as herding dogs for centuries.

The old English sheepdog doesnt run short on hair or drool, but despite their, sometimes messy existence, they make fantastic family pets. Proper breeding and training are crucial for this working breed and will result in a well-mannered, intelligent dog that offers love and companio nship to his family.

    Physical Characteristics

When the Sheepadoodle was originally bred it was common place to dock the tails to keep with the Old English Sheepdog standard. But now, as the breed has become more popular and things have progressed, most breeders have retired the practice in favor of the animated long natural tail.

Despite a recent boom in popularity, the Sheepadoodle is relatively new to the scene and doesnt yet have many standard characteristics. Because the Sheepadoodle is a crossbreed and not recognized by the American Kennel Club, there are no official breed standards set, and physical appearance can vary greatly. Even so, there are a few general characteristics that are common among these adorable dogs.

Sheepadoodle puppies are typically born black and white, with their black coat often turning grey over time as they mature. Some Sheepadoodles have brindle markings or, even more rarely, red. Also known as panda dogs, these adorable dogs sometimes have one or two patc hes over their eyes.

Because Sheepadoodles can be bred from standard or miniature sized poodles, their size can vary from 13 to 27 inches height and 45 to 80 pounds. Sheepadoodles may be referred to as mini if they were bred from a miniature poodle.

Sheepadoodles, no matter their size, have strong, muscular bodies. The coat of a Sheepadoodle is typically long and shaggy, with a varying degree of curl, depending on genetics. Because their coat type is like that of the poodle, the Sheepadoodle is usually considered hypoallergenic and a minimal shedder. That does not mean les s grooming, however!

These adorable dogs are sometimes known as giant teddy bears because of their lovable and downright irresistible appearance. The undefined parameters on appearance for this crossbreed just mean your Sheepadoodl e is one of a kind!

    Typical Breed Behavior

They are a very social breed; therefore they need to be involved right in the middle of family activities. I take mine with me any time they can come along. They know when ever I am getting ready to leave and they will be waiting for me at the front door. Just treat them like your kids and they will adore you.

    Janice Lynch

    Doodledogland

Sheepadoodles are intelligent, hardworking, and affectionate with those in their family, just like the poodle and the old English sheepdog. They love to be with their people and value companionship. Energetic and full of fun, these dogs are always ready for an adventure or a game of fetch.

This lovable crossbreed can get along well with other pets, as long as they are introduced early and properly. While typically a very gentle dog, Sheepadoodles love to herd and will chase and nip at the heels of other small animals. While they most likely will not intend to harm other animals, they may bring unwanted stress into the animals lives.
