May what we learn about healthy minds, bodies, and spirits enrich our children and our childrens children. I look forward to a brighter future for all of us. I am honored to travel this road with you.

I wont ever be able to eat anything that tastes good again! I will have to worry about all the possible complications of this disease and I wont even be able to have the enjoyment of a good meal! This was the cry of a woman who talked to me at an American Diabetes Association event several days after she had been diagnosed with diabetes. I understood her concern. I felt the same way after my diagnosis. I loved to cook and I loved to eat. I thought having diabetes meant that I would have a lifetime of bland, tasteless meals.

I was able to assure this woman that dishes like mouth-watering could all be part of affordable, healthy, diabetes-friendly cuisine. And the biggest payoff is that eating these meals may help us avoid the complications of diabetes.

For years I have enjoyed occasional trips to farmers markets. After my diagnosis I realized how many diabetes-friendly ingredients could be found there. The recipes you will find in this book will be full of those ingredients. Fresh, local, healthy, and deliciousthose are the kinds of foods I have included in my bookour book!
