Introduction from the Author
I bought a small Toyota Dolphin RV, and with my two big dogs left for a seven-week cross-country trek just shy of the one-year anniversary of my daughters passing. It was under the trees of some of Wyoming and North Dakotas most breathtaking state parks that my tears began to transform into the heartfelt idea for Miracles of Recovery . I had remained sober and clean through my daughters passing and the death of her dad many years before. Having weathered the worst, I needed to do something more with my feelings. And so my spiritual awakening began.
As I prayed, cried, and opened my heart, God gave me the words to write. His benevolence engulfed me and I saw that, regardless of the situation, a drink could never make things better. The truth shot through me, the hard-core reality of this disease: to drink is to die . That thought must never leave me, even when life delivers the unthinkable.
Recovery is the life-saving, life-changing solution. If this transformation in recovery happened for me, it will happen for you, if improving your life is what you want above all else and you are willing to work for it. Your personal success, along with your personal Miracles, are waiting for you.
My prayer is that you will recognize yourself in these daily and month-by-month inspirations. My hope for you is that this book opens your heart and with courage, you walk into recovery where you will discover your own miracles! It may be the first day of your life forever filled with hope. You see, it was for me.
Please, take what you need and leave the rest. Like me, you have the power to choose.
There is a solution.
Acceptance
January 1
This New Years Day morning, I wake wondering if this day will feel different, although nothing outward has changed. The day itself is the same as any other. The rain comes down. I still cook dinner, eat alone, and give thanks. What is different is the fact that I have reconnected to my Higher Power.
In quiet solitude, a gentle peace settles over me. I realize I am breathing slowly in the momentbut not without help. What started out as an ordinary day has become a spiritual awakening.
We no longer have to struggle. Our feet are planted firmly in the here and now with our Higher Power. In complete acceptance, I seize the day and accept what is in these moments.
Todays Meditation
I am comforted and worthy of accepting the quiet grace of my God.
Acceptance looks like a passive state, but in reality, it brings something entirely new into this world. That peace, a subtle energy vibration, is consciousness. Eckhart Tolle
Miracles of Recovery
January 2
Dont leave before your miracle happens! Most of us new to recovery hear this and think to ourselves, Yeah, right, but it wont happen for me .
Overcoming fear and self-doubt, while making the decision to seek help is the greatest and first miracle. Our second miracle is finding our way to the rooms of recovery. We didnt just fall upon recovery nor was it a roll of the dice. Our third miracle is that, regardless of how we felt, we sought help, and we followed suggestions. Our fourth miracle is the choice we made to remain clean and sober just for the rest of the day.
Those not in recovery ask, So, whats the big deal? They do not understand that we have a disease of perception, and that our inability to stop the thoughts brought on by our stinking-thinking seeks to kill us. They will never get it, because they dont have it. And until we seek recovery, we dont get it either. We must come to understand how our disease drives us to insanity, or death. This acceptance is our fifth miracle.
From here, miracles drop like shooting stars.
We hit our knees at night and thank a power greater than ourselves for doing what we were powerless to do, no matter how hard we tried. Each morning we begin again and ask throughout the day we ask in silent prayer, Please Help Me! We invoke divine energy of our Higher Power as our minds open to suggestions from others. Each time we choose to do something different, we are the miracle that could not occur without our Higher Power.
We become part of a fellowship as we move closer to passing through the doorway of our deliverance, co-creators of miracles that transform us, one day at a time.
Todays Meditation
We dont have to leave before our miracle happens. We dont ever have to leave. Each day we remain clean and sober, we are the miracle we once thought impossible.
There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. Albert Einstein
Today is a Perfect Day
January 3
Feeling gratitude in prayer and meditation is grounding. Oftentimes, the feeling that comes before any thought is contentment. We are thankful to be alive in this moment, thankful we are able to draw these pure breaths of peace and find satisfaction in being right here, right now.
As contentment grows, thoughts rise to meet pen and paper. They connect across a spiritual gulf, confirming that we are not alone.
And so, we stand for a moment, stretching upward, celebrating the goodness that we are. Our eyes close. With arms extended, I tease your fingers as yours reach out to touch mine. Together, we feel the warm rush of air push out of our lungs to mix with the breath of billions of other living organisms. It is a signal of a connectedness that assures us we are all part of one, choosing to have a perfect day.
Todays Meditation
In this perfect time of now, God, I thank you for allowing me to share the breath of life with others. I feel the embrace of your Great Spirit in a Universe that connects us all.
Just because you are happy it does not mean that the day is perfect but that you have looked beyond its imperfections. Bob Marley
Re-creating Our Lives
January 4
Recovery is about co-creating with our Higher Power. The process involves accepting different perspectives of ourselves and others. Most of all, we come to trust a spiritual practice, assured that by doing the work, the results we need will come.
