The A&C Black Dictionary of Law is designed for anyone who needs to check the meaning or pronunciation of words used in the legal context, and especially for anyone who is not a legal professional or for whom English is an additional language.
This 5th edition of the dictionary has been comprehensively updated to reflect legal developments since publication of the previous edition.
Many of these developments relate to the reorganisation of the UK civil service, notably the formation of the Ministry of Justice and HM Revenue & Customs. Similarly, the government has established new regulators for many industries, for example the FSA for financial services, Ofcom for the communications industry and the Solicitors Regulation Authority, which has taken over the Law Societys responsibilities for regulating solicitors. National security has also been a key driver of the governments legislative programme, and this new edition includes up-to-date terms relating to anti-terrorism measures.
In the social sphere, issues relating to juvenile crime, human rights and immigration have become of increasing importance and generated novel terms. Other developments include the relaxation of England and Wales licensing laws in 2003 and the introduction of same-sex civil partnerships 2005. Meanwhile, 2007 sees the ban on smoking in enclosed public places already in effect in Scotland and Wales extended to England, and Home Information Packs and Energy Performance Certificates becoming compulsory for every home sold in the UK.
Finally, in the business context, the dictionary has been updated to take into account recent developments in commercial, corporate and financial law, the Enterprise Act 2002 which overhauled the law of insolvency, the increasing use of arbitration, mediation and other alternatives to court-based litigation, and the growing significance of European and international legal concepts.
