    INTRODUCTION

SHE KNEW HOW TO LOOK AFTER THE GOATS AS WELL AS ANYONE, AND LITTLE SWAN AND BEAR WOULD FOLLOW HER LIKE TWO FAITHFUL DOGS, AND GIVE A LOUD BLEAT OF PLEASURE WHEN THEY HEARD HER VOICE.

It is hard to imagine that How to Raise Goats has been in print since 2009. This third edition includes updated statistics and references, new science, some new photos, and things I have learned since writing the original. I can tell you, 2018 has given me vindicationgoats are amazing. Previous lore says goats are negative or bad, as in the hero or the goat. This year, the Merriam-Webster dictionary added a new definition. GOAT is now defined as the greatest of all time, a statement that certainly describes my feelings about my favorite animal.

As a city girl, Im not sure where my love of goats began. It might have been the eager friendliness of petting-zoo goats or early exposure to the book Heidi by Johanna Spyri. The antics of Little Swan and Little Bear on the Swiss mountain have fascinated many children and adults over the years. I was also drawn to the comfortable size of goats compared to cows or horses. Certainly, my fascination predates the myriad memes and videos filling the internet with goats. Whatever the inspiration, when I moved to the country, my first hobby-farm animal was a goat.

The reasons people keep goats are as widespread as the places goats are keptand goat owners are as varied as the animals they keep. Sometimes called the poor mans cow, a dairy goat can comfortably supply a family with milk while being kept on a fraction of the space and resources a cow requires. This makes the goat an ideal animal for the back-to-the-land movement that surges every few decades. Goats are therefore the animal of choice for home-school families living on a small acreage.

Goat projects teach children the responsibility of caring for a living creature. Easy to handle, gentle, and gregarious, goats make a great introduction to raising livestock. With an increase in number and availability of meat and miniature goats, as well as dairy, children have more choices than ever before to raise and exhibit these fascinating creatures. National FFA Organization and 4-H goat projects are popular in many parts of the country. Through those organizations and others, I have met some bright, caring young people while showing and breeding goats. A number of these kids previously had little or no experience with livestock.

Young people arent the only ones who can benefit from keeping goats, though. As the US population becomes less rural, adults and children have less contact with the land and the animals raised in the country. Learning about the cycle of life by owning a farm animal is one of the most enriching experiences imaginable. Increasingly, immigrants in the US are raising their own goats for an opportunity to use goat products that were prevalent in their home cultures. They too may have known goats only because of eating the meat or drinking the milk without any hands-on experience.

The practical uses for goats and their products are many. I keep goats as a multipurpose animal, and try to use all the products my goats provide. I eat their meat as well as drinking their milk. Ive experimented with hides and bones for different projects. Some of my friends wont touch goat meat because they feel that doing so would be like eating a pet. I must admit that some of my own goats never reach the freezer for this very reason!

This book is a compilation of my wanderings and an introduction to the caprine world, including the science behind caring for goats. If you have an interest in keeping goats, I hope to give you an idea of what to expectand how to get help when your capricious friends dont do what you expect. There are as many ways to keep and care for goats as there are goat keepers. Enjoy your journey!

PEOPLE ARE GOATS, THEY JUST DONT KNOW IT.

    CHES MCCARTNEY, THE GOAT MAN

When I decided to raise goats, there were just a few recognized dairy breeds. The LaManchas, with their funny little ears, were easy for me to rule outthey looked too goofy. The Swiss breeds were nice, just not what I wanted. Since I wanted a dairy goat, I didnt consider the tiny Pygmy or the silky-coated Angora. The heavily muscled Boer goat hadnt reached this country yet, the Nigerian Dwarf goat wasnt really considered a milker, and the stiff-legged Tennessee Fainting goat wasnt even on my radar. The Nubian, with her long ears and variety of colors, drew my eye. Just like that, my choice of goat breed was decided, and a journey Id never anticipated began!

Im far from alone in my fascination with goats. Geographically, goats are the most widespread livestock species. Because of their adaptability, goat herds can be found anywhere from the cold mountains of Siberia to the deserts of Africa to the moist regions of the tropics.

Scientists think that the wild bezoar (Capra aegagrus), an ancestor to the goat that still thrives in Europe and Asia, was the first domesticated herbivore. In the Fertile Crescent of the Middle East, archaeological studies have found evidence that goats were bred in early human settlements. Goat remains excavated from a cave show signs of a healed broken leg that could only have been treated by humans. Those remains were carbon-dated to between twelve and fifteen thousand years ago.
