My Story:
Picture 18

M y story begins at a time where I was overweight and out of shape. I found myself on a moderate hike with a few friends. I was constantly left behind, struggling for a breath of fresh air and wondering how on earth I was going to make it through. Sound familiar?

Im from Alaska and the hiking culture is quite prominent here. Before the pandemic, I was afraid to go hiking alone so my hiking was dependent on other peoples schedules. Once the rising case numbers started forcing businesses to close and people to work from home, I began getting outside more on my own.

When I started hiking by myself, I felt free, as well as a sense of pride for completing hikes on my own. It was liberating to keep hiking when I felt like it and not having to depend on others coming along with me. During that time, I learned a lot about myself and looked forward to being out in the mountains all alone, where I could refuel and reenergize. My heart was full.

A S TIME WENT ON I started working out and training to improve my existing - photo 20

A S TIME WENT ON, I started working out and training to improve my existing ability as a hiker. Aside from the physical changes I made, I began developing a mindset that helped me make it to the summit, even when it got challenging.

Since then, Ive hiked some of the largest and steepest mountains in Alaska and reached a point where I was able to hike over 4,500 ft in elevation in one day! Both Knoya Peak and Pepper Peak were over 4,500 ft elevation gain. If you had asked me a year ago if this was possible for me, I would have told you no and maybe even laughed. Its through overcoming various challenges during each hike and learning from each and every mistake that I was able to get to where I am today.

Im no longer a weak and timid hiker. I thoroughly enjoy each hike I do and I want you to experience that as well! As you go through this guide, youll find a comprehensive list of the things Ive done to improve my own strength and endurance. If you apply these tactics, youll have no trouble achieving the same results, as well as learning how to better connect with nature and feel confident in your hiking abilities!
