A Word from
Gloria Gaither

Twenty years ago, Shirley Dobson and I created a book called Lets Make a Memory. We firmly believed that memories are the strandsbeautiful or uglythat create the fabric of our lives. We were convinced that great memories dont just happen, but are made on purpose.

We also held to the belief that most of us, especially parents, really want to make good memories, but sometimes dont know where to start or find ourselves too harried by the stuff of life to notice the moments slipping through our fingers. One of these days, we think, were going to take the kids to the zoo, visit the pumpkin patch, or spend a week at the ocean or in the mountains for a campout. We may even buy the membership, purchase the camping equipment, or look at travel folders.

But before we know it, our kids are grown and the memories we intended to make have been replaced by too much fast food, too much TV, and too many apologies for missed ballgames, missed recitals, and missed opening nights.

Shirley and I had a feeling twenty years ago that even single and part-time parents could make beautiful memories if they recognized the possibilities in a few simple supplies and just an hour or two of shared time. We knew that the best memories arent necessarily made of grand plans, big vacation budgets, or weekend-long outings. Indeed, the best memories are often made of delight in silly, simple things. And the most precious moments are just that, only moments: a hug, a tickling match, a pillow fight, a surprise stop for ice cream, or a detour from the ordinary to see the stars.

Looking back, Shirley and I cant believe that our collection of simple ideas was in print for over two decades. We are thrilled that families all over the world carried this collection in suitcases, smeared its cover with paint, clay, and glue, and dog-eared the pages with much use.

Now, more than ever, we believe in the power of magical moments made of everyday stuff. We are delighted to add to the common materials of an earlier generation those of a new millennium: digital cameras, e-mail, polymer clays, and acrylic paints. But the most important resource remains the doing itselfand the doing of a thing together. Its not how sophisticated the materials, but how loving and joyful the experience was that children (and grown-ups) remember. It doesnt take much to make an ordinary day extraordinary!

This collection of ideas is meant to be just thatideas. These starting places may make you think of even better ways to make a moment memorable. Just remember that any house, apartment, or cabin can be a castle if someone is made into a prince or a princess there. Any creation becomes an icon if it represents something unforgettable.
