In some instances we have been unable to trace the owners of copyright material, and we would appreciate any information that would enable us to do so.
When Matt and Sara were undertaking their social work degree they realised that the book they would have found invaluable did not exist, so decided the solution was to write the book themselves. After graduation they approached a publisher with their idea and invited Anne, one of their lecturers, to work with them. After many hours working on their computers and many meetings around Anne's kitchen table this book is the result. We hope you will find it an invaluable companion whilst you study for your social work degree, whether you are undertaking this at undergraduate or master's level.
The information in this book is designed to help you to maximise your educational experience. We share the knowledge we have gained from experience and from research studies and offer ways in which you can develop your academic skills in order to become a critically reflective practitioner. However, this information will inevitably reflect our own experiences, preferences and perspectives.
The chapters include extracts from real assignments, and comments from real students who share their insights with you, along with top tips and practical checklists to help you study more effectively. The assignment extracts include references to the texts that were used, but these are not in the references section of this book as it is important that you discover your own up-to-date sources. We refer to the Professional Capability Framework (The College of Social Work 2012) and to the Benchmarks for Social Work (QAA 2008) throughout the book to anchor the material in the documents that are used to design social work degree programme and against which you will be assessed.
