Introduction
The purpose of this book
The first year in practice is a critical time in a social workers professional development, and the value of a formal programme of support has been identified as central to enabling graduates make the move from student to professional. This has led to the development of the Newly Qualified Social Worker (NQSW) frameworks for newly qualified social workers employed in adult and mental health services across the four countries that make up the UK. Their purpose is to provide clarity in understanding the respective roles and responsibilities of both employee and employer in developing a workforce that delivers high-quality social work. Government and society expect social workers to take an active role in developing and demonstrating a high level of skill, knowledge and professionalism when working with those whom they may encounter.
This book is intended to support you in meeting those expectations. Each chapter aims to help you negotiate the journey into professional practice as effectively, and painlessly, as possible, drawing on the experiences of those who have already embarked on this journey and the authors experience of supporting newly qualified social workers in their personal and professional development in post-qualifying education. Each chapter explores common themes identified as important, providing theoretical and practical support.
The content of this book is not intended as a blueprint for social work in adult and mental health services, nor to specify what practice should be like, but rather to enable readers to identify ways in which they can make the transition from student to professional and expand their thinking, skills and knowledge beyond the point of initial qualification in essence, to bring together academic learning and practice experience to facilitate professional development in your first year, and beyond.
Who is this book for?
Whilst the primary focus in this book is on individuals coming to the end of their qualifying programmes and new entrants to the profession, of equal importance is the full engagement of your new employer in supporting the delivery of high-quality social work services. Managers, supervisors, training and developmental personnel have a central role and responsibility in supporting all NQSWs to meet any statutory or regulatory requirements. This book can provide a useful aide mmoire for them in understanding your journey from student to professional, as well as undertaking their own particular roles effectively.
Key areas, and issues commonly identified as important for those embarking on a new professional role, are discussed, and information provided is transferable across adult service user groups and practice settings. However, each reader will be on their own developmental journey and what works for one might not for another; therefore, please take an open and critical approach to understanding and applying the contents of this book.
How this book is organised
The book is divided into three parts:
Part I: Finding Your Feet ()
Part II: Finding Your Way ()
Part III: Finding the Way Forward ()
The individual chapters in each part aim to provide support and guidance as you embark on your professional career.
