ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Johnny Molloy is a writer and adventurer based in Johnson City, Tennessee. His outdoor passion started on a backpacking trip in Great Smoky Mountains National Park while attending the University of Tennessee. That first foray unleashed a love of the outdoors that has led Molloy to spend most of his time hiking, backpacking, canoe camping, and tent camping for the past three decades. Friends enjoyed his outdoor adventure stories; one even suggested he write a book. He pursued his friends idea and soon parlayed his love of the outdoors into an occupation. His efforts have resulted in more than fifty booksso far. His writings include guidebooks on camping and paddling, comprehensive guidebooks about specific areas, and true outdoor adventure books covering the eastern United States. Other items you may want to consider depend upon your personal interests as a paddler: fishing gear, phone in dry case, trash bag, camera, watch, extra batteriesespecially for your GPS, binoculars, and wildlife identification books.
APPENDIX B: CANOE TERMINOLOGY
Bailer | A cup or other device used to scoop water from the bottom of the canoe |
Bottom curve | Curve of the canoe bottom from one side of the boat to the other |
Bow | Front area of the canoe; refers to an area, rather than a specific part of the canoe |
Deck | Small covered part on each end of the canoe, level with the gunwales |
Depth | Area from the top of the gunwales to the bottom of the canoe |
Draft | Depth of the boat under the waterline |
Dry bags | Waterproof bags, primarily made of rubber and/or plastic, with a watertight seal |
Flare | Outward curve of the sides of the boat |
Flatwater | Still water without current; a lake, pond, or portion of ocean without tidal current |
Foot brace | Metal rod or wooden plank along bottom of canoe to stabilize a canoers feet |
Freeboard | Height of boat above the waterline |
Gunwales | Also spelled gunnels; the upper rails of the canoe. The gunwales run atop each side of the canoe from tip to tip, bow to stern |
Keel | Nautical term for the centerpiece underlying a boat from bow to stern, to which the frame of a boat is attached. For canoes, the keel is the ridge running along the bottom of a canoe from front end to back end |
Knee pads | Foam glued to the bottom of the canoe for comfort as you paddle with your knees down on the canoe bottom |
Painters | Ropes tied onto each end of the canoe |
PFD | Personal flotation device, more commonly known as a life vest |
Port | Side of the canoe to your left |
Portaging | The act of carrying your canoe from point A to point B on land in the midst of a paddle, most often from lake to lake in the wilderness, or around a particularly tough rapid in a river |
Portage yokes | Padded shoulder straps that you can mount to the center thwart of the canoe to make portaging more comfortable |
Rocker | Curve of the keel line between bow and stern |
Saddle | Seat used by whitewater paddlers when placing their knees on the bottom of the boat with their feet pointed back |
Skid plate | Precut fiberglass cloth patches that are affixed onto the canoe at high-abrasion areas |
Splash cover | A waterproof cover fitted over the canoe with snaps and used to prevent rapids and waves from splashing over the gunwales into the canoe |
Staging | Carrying your canoe and gear in stages over a portage, rather than carrying it all from end to end of the portage |
Starboard | Side of the canoe to your right |
Stern | Back of the canoe; refers to an area, as does the bow, rather than a specific part of the canoe |
Thwart | A crossbeam linking the sides of the canoe at the gunwales, the top of the canoe. Thwarts support and stabilize the canoe, and preserve the integrity of the canoes shape |
Tumblehome | Inward slope of the upper side of the canoe, from the middle of the canoe sides up to the gunwales |
Whitewater | Fast-moving water in rapids, often foaming as it dashes over rocks and other obstacles |
Yoke | A curved neck ring in the center thwart of the canoe used for portaging your boat |
