The Piedmont

As the mountains fade, the foothills of the Piedmont begin. Here youll find rolling hills and vast farmland sprawling out across the center of the state. Explore the forested pine-lands of the Uwharrie National Forest, or camp along the shores of Badin, Falls, Jordan, or Kerr Lake. With ospreys circling overhead, bald eagles roosting, and stunning sunsets, this is as good as it gets in lakeside camping! Ample opportunities for swimming, fishing, and boating abound. The region also offers miles of hiking, mountain bike, bridle, and off-road-vehicle trails. From Charlotte to Raleigh, Greensboro to Fayetteville, camping in the Piedmont can be easily accessed from every corner of the region.

About the campground: The campground at Cane Creek Park is much like your typical RV park. The sites are all lined up in a row, one after the other, without much in the category of privacy. A separate wilderness camping area is set aside for tent campers only. These sites are walk-in sites, and a short walk of less than 0.1 mile leads you through the longleaf pines to your campsite. Each tent campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring, but theres not a lot of underbrush, so theres not a ton of privacy here either. Plus the wilderness area is right next to the boat ramp, so on weekends you are inundated with all the boat traffic as well.

Cane Creek Park is loaded with activities. The park is split into two sections: the campground and the day-use area. The campground has a boat ramp, a swim beach, a volleyball net, an open field to toss a ball in, and a camp store. The day-use area is located about 5 miles from the campground, but you have full access to the area when you stay at the campground. The day-use area has an abundance of things to do: softball/baseball field, soccer field, volleyball nets, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard, a small climbing wall in one of several playgrounds, a minigolf course, picnic areas, a swim beach, fishing piers, a boat ramp, and a boat rental station where they rent paddleboats, canoes, and rowboats.

Separate fees may be charged for certain activities contact the park for - photo 3

Separate fees may be charged for certain activities; contact the park for specifics. All the activities available within the day-use area help offset the lack of privacy within the campground.

About the campground: This wonderful small community park gives you a lot of bang for your buck! The campsites are tent only, and some of them sit right on the edge of a lovely little fishing pond. The camping here gets pretty hot in summer, but the park has a swimming pool, so if you do camp here in summer, at least you have a way to cool down.

Because it offers so many activities, Camp T. N. Spencer is very popular with the locals. Theres a playground, a volleyball net, horseshoe pits, a fishing pond, and picnic areas. They even loan out fishing rods, and on occasion, the park will lead guided nature hikes along the hiking trails. If you prefer to hit the trails on your own, you can try your hand at navigating the geocaching course.

If the weathers bad, or you just dont feel like roughing it, you can rent one of the adorable cabins that rest alongside the shore of the pond.
