Case, Agreement, and their Interactions: New Perspectives on Differential Argument Marking: summary, description and annotation

Differential argument marking has been a hot topic in linguistics for several decades, both because it is cross-linguistically widespread and because it raises essential questions at multiple levels of grammar, including the relationship between abstract processes and overt morphological marking, between case and agreement, and between syntax and information structure.

This volume provides an introduction into the current state of the art of research on differential case marking and chapters by leading linguists addressing theoretical questions in a wide range of typologically and geographically diverse languages from the Indo-European, Sinitic, Turkic, and Uralic families. The chapters engage with current theoretical issues in the morphology, syntax, semantics, and processing of differential argument marking. A central issue addressed by all the authors is the adequacy of various theoretical approaches in modelling (different varieties of) differential case marking, such as those determined by topicality, those driven by cumulative factors, and those that involve double marking.

The volume will be of interest to students and researchers working on cross-linguistic variation in differential marking and its theoretical modelling.

Preface and acknowledgements

This edited volume is the result of a productive themed session on Differential Object Marking held at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea at Leiden University in The Netherlands.

The session brought together experts from different fields, including experimental syntax, theoretical syntax, comparative syntax, typology, corpus linguistics, semantics, and pragmatics, and different theoretical frameworks, including Minimalism, Optimality Theory, and Role and Reference Grammar, for an exchange of ideas and proposals across these boundaries. The two-day event also saw an incredible diversity of languages, including novel observations across many language families: Estonian, Finnish, and Hungarian (Uralic), Spanish and Romanian (Romance), Greek (Hellenic), Senaya (Semitic), Turkish (Altaic), Mandarin Chinese (Sinitic), and several Bantu languages. Across these diverse frameworks, subfields, methodologies, and languages, participants presented cutting edge linguistic research, relating to and expanding on recent developments in syntax and morphology.

We are very grateful to all the authors who submitted their work to this volume, as well as to the reviewers, whose time, energy, and thoughtful feedback greatly improved the chapters within. For comments on the introductory chapter in particular, wed like to thank Stefan Keine and Philipp Weisser, and for careful proofreading of the whole volume, we thank Kelsey Kraus.

Abstract

Our introduction to this volume provides an empirical overview of the phenomenon of DOM, .

Keywords: Case and agreement, differential object marking, differential subject marking, licensing, dependent case,
What is differential object marking?

Differential object marking (DOM) is a widespread linguistic phenomenon that (canonically) divides objects into two classesa class that is overtly marked and a class that is not overtly marked ( Canonical DOM involves a two-way contrast in case marking on direct objects, as in (1)the object may be morphologically unmarked, (1a), or bear an overt case marker, (1b).

(1)DOM in Hindi ()
a.Minaekbaccauthaarahiihai.
Mina. Fa/onechildliftPROG.Fbe. PRS. 3 SG
Mina is picking up a child.
b.Minaekbacce-kouthaarahiihai.
Mina. Fa/onechild- DATliftPROG.Fbe. PRS. 3 SG
Mina is picking up a particular child.

Another hallmark of DOM, also exemplified by Hindi, is that the accusative case marking on marked direct objects is often syncretic with the morphological dative case on indirect objects; this is represented in our gloss of -ko as DAT in (1b). It is a matter of debate whether this syncretism is due to a morphological factor or whether marked direct objects are indeed licensed syntactically in the same way as dative indirect objects are (see, e.g., )in the present volume this question is addressed by the contribution of Rita Manzini, Leonardo Savoia, and Ludovico Franco. Finally, there are some instances of DOM where direct objects alternate between two marked forms, rather than a marked and unmarked form; we will see such a case in (7) below.

1.1 Factors triggering DOM

DOM may be triggered by factors relating to definiteness, animacy, affectedness, and information structure, often with more than one factor coming into play. These factors can be modeled in scales, (2):

(2)a.Animacy/person (, i.a.)
1/2 > 3 Pronoun > Name > Human > Animate > Inanimate
b.Specificity/definiteness (, i.a.)
Pronoun > Name > Definite > Specific Indefinite > Non-specific
c.Information structure (Dalrymple & Nikolaeva 2011)
