The Hard People: Rivalry, Sympathy and Social Structure in an Alpine Valley: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "The Hard People: Rivalry, Sympathy and Social Structure in an Alpine Valley" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Heady draws on both participant observation and interviews with older informants to trace the effects of recent exogenous technological and institutional changes, and the way local people have responded to them. His findings relate to such themes of recent history as nationalism, regionalism and anti-clericalism; and contribute to the theoretical debate on the relevance of structuralist anthropology to European societies.

Acknowledgements
This book started life as a doctoral thesis in the department of social anthropology at the London School of Economics. I would like to thank the staff and fellow students for providing a very stimulating environment in which to pursue a late-flowering interest in anthropology in the part-time MSc and later during the research that led to this book. I am also grateful to my employers, the former Office of Population, Censuses and Surveys, for allowing me the time to attend the MSc classes and for the later leave of absence which made it possible to undertake fieldwork.
My research plans started to take shape during a trip to Italy in 1988, in the course of which I visited the anthropology department at Siena for a week, where Professors Solinas and Clemente and Dr Li-Causi were generous with their time and comments about northern Italian society. Vanessa Maher at Turin also offered helpful advice, and introduced me to Dionigi Albera who generously gave up a day taking me to visit the alpine valley where he was working. Leo Piasere did the same for the countryside round Verona. It was these two visits, along with some films made by the faculty at Siena, which gave me a real sense of what working in the north Italian countryside might be like.
