Jared Brown - Shaken Not Stirred: A Celebration of the Martini

Drink historians and recipients of the 2011 International Wine & Spirits Competition Communicator of the Year Award, Jared Brown and Anistatia Miller have written more than thirty books during their twenty-year collaboration, including Shaken Not Stirred: A Celebration of the Martini, The Mixellany Guide to Vermouth & Other Apritifs, and Cuban Cocktails. Their two-volume Spirituous Journey: A History of Drink charts the history of spirits and mixed drinks from 7000 B . C . to the mid-twentieth century. (The first volume won a coveted Gourmand World Cookbook Award for Best Drink History in the UK in 2009 and the second received the same honor in 2010.) And in October 2010, the couple also received the Best Drinks Writing Award at the 2010 CLASS Magazine Awards.

Miller and Brown are contributing editors for Worlds Best Bars and are cocktail gurus on Drinkology. They are also regular contributors to Imbibe and CLASS magazines in the UK and Mixology magazine in Germany. They have written extensively for other publications, including Wine Spectator, Cigar Aficionado, Gotham and Hamptons magazines, Los Angeles Confidential, Boston Common, Capitol File, and Food Arts in the United States as well as THEME and Imbibe in the UK.

These two former bartenders also practice what they preach. Brown is master distiller for the multi-award-winning Sipsmith Gin, the first newly licensed London distillery to open in nearly two hundred years. They have amassed a collection of international awards for their work as distillery consultants creating new spirits, including a coveted 2002 international Best Spirit in the white spirits category from the Beverage Testing Institute for Heavy Water Vodka. They have worked as tasters for a number of products, including the Beefeater 24 and No. 3 Gin. They recently completed a three-year project in the South of France, restoring Exposition Universelle des Vins et Spiritueux, a museum of wines and spirits founded in 1958, and cataloging the 8,000+ bottles, 1,200 menus, and other antiquities in the collection.

They live in the Cotswolds with their cat, Kitten.

Its hard not to think of cocktails in general without thinking of the Martini in specific. While not the first cocktail by any stretch of the imagination, this flagship libation has spanned many thirsty generations. It was in 1997 that the first edition of Shaken Not Stirred: A Celebration of the Martini was published. In an era when few were taking the cocktail seriously, Jared Brown and Anistatia Miller took a decidedly different approach with this groundbreaking book, diving headlong into the exploration of the history and mythology of the Martini. Its musings were a balanced blend of information entertainment. It educated the reader with both wit and whimsy, but, more important, it revealed many long-forgotten aspects of the Martini and the people who have enjoyed them over the decades.

It is now fifteen years since its first publication, and what a change the cocktail landscape has gone through. Still revered as the quintessential cocktail, the Martini is the origin of many debates, and probably always will be. When we first met Jared and Anistatia, we were immediately seduced by their collective insight into all of the facets of the cocktail. They also revealed a uniquely rich view of the world and they impress with the most intricate, factual details on a myriad of topics.

As fellow colleagues, Jared and Anistatia often astound us with the breadth and depth of their research, and its a given that we place them within an elite circle of people we consider the greatest cocktail historians in the world. Additionally, they strike us as great cocktail detectives, with their uncanny ability to unearth historical errors within the walls of beverage history. Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Clouseau would have nothing on them.
