Preface

Joomla! is an open source web content management system, and as such, it is free to download, modify, and use. It has been implemented by thousands of people around the world and is used by millions of people daily as the basis for blog sites, fan clubs, community portals, classified ads, corporate intranets, e-commerce, discussion sites, resource directories, image galleries, and much more. As you probably know, the recent release of Joomla! 3.x has upped the ante with many surprises still waiting to be discovered. It's great to find something new with every upcoming release.

The industry of web design is a fickle one. Just like every other form of artistic expression, the craft of designing templates continues to evolve. I started my website by building adventures in 2004. At that time, clients demanded full-width, fully-featured websites full of text, graphic elements, animations, and so on. Now, nine years later, there are new trends in demand. Today, web developers advise their clients on how their site should look, not only to stand out from the competition but also to stay slightly ahead of it. Currently, at a time when content is the king, a template has become like an invisible grid that connects everything and even adapts to the screen resolution when the page (template) is displayed. This can be easily seen by looking at projects created in recent years.

Many clients seek a custom solution to their specific requirements. High-budget projects require websites with unique layouts to be seen as out of the ordinary. They know that good design is both effective and necessary. Such clients don't want a template that is used by hundreds of other websites, or one that any person can just buy or even download for free. On the other hand, we have many cost-conscious clients who don't see what the big deal is about custom design, and they will most often search for and choose the cheapest solutions.

Creating a Joomla! template wasn't always easy. It's a task that requires diverse skills and experience and the ability to apply expertise in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. In an effort to accelerate the process of creating templates, the notion of template frameworks was developed and it is a reality today. This book will teach you how to effectively build your own Joomla! 3.x template with the latest technology and how to customize the final look of your templatemaking it both low-cost and unique. I hope you enjoy it!
