Make Five Wishes
If you dont already know, find out where fountains in your town are and drag a pocketful of pennies to at least five of them. Hotels and public plazas often have fountains, as do shopping malls. Think of a different wish to make at each one. Bring extra pennies to share with kids who may be playing at the fountains. And remember, nobody has ever proven that wishes made at fountains dont eventually come true.
Festival of Tearjerkers
Host a tearjerker movie fest. Try such classics as Romeo and Juliet, Love Story, West Side Story, plus any others you can think of. Provide a box of Kleenex for each friend joining you. Really wallow, until you get bored with all the gut-wrenching suffering.
Feed the Birds
Pick up a bag of birdseed or cracked corn and head to a park. Find a picturesque bench and feed the squirrels or birds. If youre at a lake or pond, be sure to only feed waterfowl, such as ducks, either cracked corn or waterfowl pellets. If youre tempted to clean out the old bread in your fridge and feed it to themdont. Food such as donuts, cheerios, or bread is not easily digestible for birds, and keeps them from being able to eat more nutritious food.
Trashy Treats
For a truly trashy date with yourself, head to the frozen foods section of your grocery store and find your favorite TV dinner. To balance the meal intellectually, pick up that unmentionable magazine you enjoy (in spite of it being far below your intelligence level) and make an evening of it. Accessorize the evening with other trashy details that will help you laugh at yourself for occasionally having such bad taste.
Matinee Movie
Pull the movie listings out of the paper and see what matinees are playing. This is a particularly good idea if it means procrastinating on a postponable chore. Work through lunch so you can escape from the office a little early and head to the movies. Maybe you can convince a friend to be spontaneous with you if you promise to share your popcorn.
Personal Assistant
Be a friends personal assistant for a half or a full day. Be a chauffeur, run errands; do whatever it is a high-priced assistant might do and, by all means, ham it up with whatever uniforms are appropriate. Its comic relief to get out of your own life and help out in someone elses, particularly if that someone has kids, or is overloaded with work, or is an older person who could really use the help.
Throw a Party
Throw yourself a party next Friday night. Perhaps a birthday party to celebrate your favorite age, whether thats an age youve already passed, one youre looking forward to, or the one youre at right now. Ask all your guests to come as that age. Stock up on all those paper products and party favors you had or would like to have on that birthday. Dont forget to play silly and embarrassing party games.
Life History
Write a list of fifty good things that have happened in your life, from finding your lost turtle in the second grade to the name of the person who first said you had a beautiful smile. Nothing is too small or insignificant to remember and record. In the face of possibly not winning the Nobel Prize this year, its nice to remember how meaningful little things are.
Hidden Coupons
On different pieces of paper, write out ten little treat coupons for yourself and hide them in places that you wont come across for a while, places youre likely to forget about, like the pocket of your winter coat (if its summer) or between checks in your next checkbook. When you find your coupons, treat yourself to whatever it was you wrote down.
Make An Album
Make a photo album of your friends and loved ones. Track down photos you dont have and take pictures of friends near you. This is a good thing to have around to remind yourself of whats really important and who loves you. Keep the album in a box that you can throw more photos into as you get them so you can add to the album the next time you feel like it.
Ten Things To Do
Write down ten places youve wanted to go and things youve wanted to do but just havent gotten around to. Then look at a calendar and put a date next to each item on your list. Make sure youre doing something you enjoy once a week.
New Socks and Underwear
Make rags out of your old underwear and socks, and go get some new ones. Its time to replace those holes and that worn-out elastic. Maybe even buy a patterned pair of underwear thats a little out of character for you. Theyll make you smile when you remember youre wearing them.
Bake Cookies
Bake cookies. Most chocolate chip packages have recipes on the back of the bag, or you can track down a recipe from a friend, if you dont have one thats especially good. Then bundle up small bunches of cookies in little bags and give them away to the people around you, like neighbors you dont know but keep running into, people in your office, and other friends who would enjoy a home-baked cookie.
Plant Flowers
Even if you dont have a green thumb, head to a gardeners supply store and pick up some seeds. Get pots or a flower box if you dont have a piece of soil near you. Then go home, plant those seeds, and make a ritual of watering them.
Update Your Address Book
Ferret out all the half-complete address books you have in different places and consolidate them in a new, clean, updated book. Make a note of the friends or relatives youve lost touch with and call them up to say hello.
Ice Cream in Bed
Pick out a junky novel, get a pint of your favorite ice cream or, if you prefer, some sugar-free self-indulgence, and allow yourself an afternoonor however much time you can takeof sheer, unforgivable, guilt-free, slothful decadence.
Walk and Talk
Put on your walking shoes and get a little fresh air. Head anywhere for a nice, long walk. While you are walking, say hi to the people you pass. Even if you dont feel friendly, be friendly, it might persuade you to come out of your funk.
Walk a Dog
Call the animal shelter and volunteer to walk a dog or spend time with cats on a regular basis. The animals will appreciate your attention. Besides, getting back to basic, playful animal behavior, and giving in such a simple way, can help put things into perspective.
Flowers, Flowers, Flowers
Put flowers all over your home: in your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and work space. Farmers markets are good places to get lots of flowers inexpensively. Pick up enough so that you can give flowers to somebody else who might like them too.
Rearrange Your Furniture
Rearrange your furniture. Move your bed by a window to get a morning breeze, do whatever you can to let the sun in and brighten up your space. Move the furniture around just for a change and see how you like it. Finally get that bookshelf, filing cabinet, or magazine basket so you dont have to keep tripping over your own piles of stuff. Make your space a place you love.
