Introduction

Kids market days are run by the kids and for the kids. No matter how funny and creative the items they produce, we encourage our kids to have fun making and creating their wares. The focus is on handmade and hand-crafted items. The event is about family and community spirit. It is also an opportunity to teach kids more about Rands and cents.

With the ideas in Kids Market Day, Id like to create an environment that encourages not only entrepreneurship, but creativity as well. Kids are given the valuable experience of the joy one feels when creating something beautiful to sell, as well as the excitement of selling that item for a small profit. When I was a child, we had lemonade stands all the time. We made some good pocket money and I credit my interest in entrepreneurship to those early experiences. It was fun setting up shop with my brother and sister, and I love giving my daughter, Georgia, the opportunity to enjoy that same feeling.

All of the projects in this book are easy and fun to make. I hope the projects inspire you and your kids!

The stalls are all about giving children the opportunity to create something beautiful, so use different coloured fabrics, colourful bunting, balloons, ribbons etc.: anything that will make a stall vibrant and inviting.

  4. 4. Place the whiskers template on white felt and cut out. Glue the whiskers into place as shown in photographs above.
  5. 5. Cut out a small maroon felt circle for the nose and paste just below the centre of the eyes. Cut a small hole on each side of the mask and thread through some elastic to secure the mask to your face.
