Dedication
This book is dedicated to all of the youth leaguers who love to play baseball, and to their parents, who spend a lot of time supporting their ballplayers, by driving them to practice, watching games or coaching. It is also dedicated to the older players who have stuck with the game and continue to work hard everyday. If you work hard, you can achieve great things.
Wendell Kim
I dedicate this book to Bill Wilkerson, Warren Powers and the late Robert Hyland who helped a young journalism student find a place in sports as a person and not a female sports reporter, a long time ago. I would also like to thank Wendell Kim for all of his work on this book.

Foreword
Each spring my family and I look forward to that date in February when the pitchers and catchers report to spring training. It seems that no matter how cold it is outside, just knowing it is almost baseball season warms us up and excites us. When we moved to Arizona it was a dream come true, because here they play baseball year-round.
It was in Scottsdale, where the San Francisco Giants train, that we took our sons to a baseball clinic, and I had the pleasure of hearing Wendell Kim speak. He is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about baseball, but what I liked best was his practical advice.
My husband, Rob, has always coached our sons' teams, and I have enjoyed helping. We have spent a small fortune trying to make sure the boys get whatever they need to play.
Wendell said sensible things like, "You don't need to spend a lot of money on baseball equipment when you are starting out." He talked about picking up balls at garage sales, and making your own batting tees. As I listened to him, I thought, "This is really good information that I think other parents would like to hear." I approached him about putting it all down in a book, and he agreed to do it.
It is our hope that this book contains a lot of information that is valuable to you, as youth league parents, coaches or players. The more you know about baseball, the more fun it will be. Hopefully, you will be so enthusiastic you will run out to your position every inning like Wendell Kim runs out to his position as third base coach for the Boston Red Sox.
