As the DIY trend continues, crafters are taking their skills to the next level and are looking for whats next. Hand-dyeing is on the rise--giving crafters the freedom to create their own unique yarns and fibers to spin wholly original projects. This photo-intensive book covers everything from dyeing with Kool-Aid to more involved processes like working with acid dyes and hand-painting. Concealed wiro binding allows the book to lay flat--perfect for undertaking projects with wet or dye-covered hands. Barbara Parry (Shelburne, MA) is the founder and creative vision behind Foxfire Fiber & Designs. She produces her own yarn line from the wool of the sheep she raises on her farm in the Berkshire foothills, which is home to 70 sheep, two llamas, and two goats. The wool she produces is prized by knitters and handspinners and has won numerous awards. Barbara chronicles life on her farm in her blog Sheep Gal: Notes from a Shelburne Shepherd

Praise for the Teach Yourself VISUALLY Series

I just had to let you and your company know how great I think your books are. I just purchased my third Visual book (my first two are dog-eared now!) and, once again, your product has surpassed my expectations. The expertise, thought, and effort that go into each book are obvious, and I sincerely appreciate your efforts. Keep up the wonderful work!

Tracey Moore (Memphis, TN)

I have several books from the Visual series and have always found them to be valuable resources.

Stephen P. Miller (Ballston Spa, NY)

Thank you for the wonderful books you produce. It wasnt until I was an adult that I discovered how I learnvisually. Although a few publishers out there claim to present the material visually, nothing compares to Visual books. I love the simple layout. Everything is easy to follow. And I understand the material! You really know the way I think and learn. Thanks so much!

Stacey Han (Avondale, AZ)

Like a lot of other people, I understand things best when I see them visually. Your books really make learning easy and life more fun.

John T. Frey (Cadillac, MI)

I am an avid fan of your Visual books. If I need to learn anything, I just buy one of your books and learn the topic in no time. Wonders! I have even trained my friends to give me Visual books as gifts.

Illona Bergstrom (Aventura, FL)

I write to extend my thanks and appreciation for your books. They are clear, easy to follow, and straight to the point. Keep up the good work! I bought several of your books and they are just right! No regrets! I will always buy your books because they are the best.

Her hand-dyed yarns and fibers have been featured in Wild Fibers magazine and in several knitting books. She chronicles life on her farm in her blog Sheep Gal (www.sheepgal.com) and is a free-lance writer contributing to fiber arts publications. Acknowledgments

I thank the many people who contributed to this book: Pam Mourouzis, Suzanne Snyder, Matt Bowen, and the Wiley team; Vicki Jensen and Sara Lamb for their technical expertise and careful reading of my manuscript; Linda Roghaar; Kathy Elkins; knitwear designers Lisa Lloyd, Melissa Morgan Oakes, and Kirsten Hipsky; Barbara Giguere, Teresa Campbell, and Holly Sonntag, whose stitches composed the samples in the book; Holly Sonntag for reliable back-up at both the farm and studio; and the many friends and family members who helped in myriad ways. I especially thank my husband, Mike, whose encouragement and support made this project possible.

Chapter 1: Why Learn to Dye?

Learning to dye fiber opens the door to an exciting new realm of color possibilities. Whether you knit, crochet, spin, weave, or felt, the greatest benefit of dyeing your own fiber is an unlimited range of color. The freedom of color choice in any fibers you wish to use presents a vast world of options.

My work with color in the dye pot began over a decade ago. I am fortunate to live on a 220-acre sheep farm in the Berkshire foothills of western Massachusetts. My flock provides an abundance of raw materials, and the ever-changing natural beauty of the pastoral landscape provides color inspiration.
