Preface
This book is an attempt to understand Milton's major poetry as a whole and to suggest a general interpretive matrix that can include most of the poetic corpus in a coherent although not exhaustive vision. We are convinced that Milton, in his poetry, returned constantly under various guises and in various genres to certain themes and ideas. These, predominantly religious and epistemological in nature, form a consistent pattern in his poetry and can be seen in a substantial and copious way in Paradise Lost and in a more restricted but not greatly different manner in Milton's other poetic works. Thus, a general synthetic interpretation of Milton's poetry insistently suggested itself to us, and in this book we attempt to develop it.
