Meet the Neelys: Pat and Gina, husband-and-wife team, hosts of their own television show, and proprietors of the celebrated Memphis and Nashville eateries, Neelys Bar-B-Que.
The Neelys down-home approach to cooking has earned them the highest accolades from coast to coast. It has also won them millions of viewers on the Food Network. Simply put, the Neelys are all about good food and good times. In this, their eagerly awaited debut cookbook, the Neelys share the delicious food they have been cooking up for years both at home and in their restaurants.
Pat and Gina hail from families with a boundless love of cooking and bedrock traditions of sharing meals. At the Neelys, mealtime is family time, and that means no stinting on the sauce. Indeed, thats one of the Neely secrets: the liberal application of barbeque sauce to almost anythingspaghetti, nachos, salad, you name it. Of course, there are other secrets as well, and you will find them all in the pages of Down Home with the Neelys, along with more than 120 mouthwatering recipes.
Here are the tried-and-true southern recipes that have been passed down from one Neely generation to the next, including many of their signature dishes, such as Barbeque Deviled Eggs, Florida Coast Pickled Shrimp, Pats Wings of Fire, Ginas Collard Greens, Grandma Jeans Potato Salad, Nanas Southern Gumbo, Memphis-sized Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Slaw, Get Yo Man Chicken, and Sock-It-to-Me Cake. Certainly, no self-respecting southerner would dream of offering a meal to a guest without a proper drink, so Pat and Gina have included some of their favorite libations here, too.
The Neelys work, laugh, love, and play harder than any family youll ever meet. Their love for good food is infectious, and in Down Home with the Neelys, they bring their heavenly inspired cooking down to earth for all to share.

Foreword by Paula Deen

WHEN MY BOYS, BOBBY AND JAMIE, rolled into Nashville a couple years ago, looking for great food to feature on their show, Road Tasted, they struck it rich. They not only discovered fabulous barbecued ribs and pulled pork and barbecue spaghetti and baked beans at Neelys Bar-B-Quethey discovered Patrick and Gina Neely. I think the story went something like this: When my boys sat down to film the segment, they discovered that Pat was a gem, the kind of guy theyd want to hang out and have a few beers with. In between takes, they also found out that Gina was no shrinking violet and as spicy as the hot sauce they were shaking all over those ribs. Soon enough, the four of them were laughing and carrying on so much they practically forgot about the cameras. Then, like good boys, Bobby and Jamie called their momma and said, I think weve found something really special here.

Indeed they had. Patrick and Gina Neely are not just extraordinary restaurateurs (they have restaurants in Nashville and Memphis) who have spent years in the trenches (like all of us in the business) serving great food, they are also warm and wonderful people and that rare thing, a husband and wife who actually work and cook together. And Ill be damned if they dont get along awfully well to boot. Whats more, they have had the good sense to pay attention to the cooking of their parents and grandparents, and are passing on those traditions to their darling daughters, Spenser and Shelbi. Thats what I call gettin it.

Before long, I had to get the Neelys to Savannah to see what all the fuss was about. I hosted them on Paulas Party, to which they brought most of their kin, and then things really got out of hand. As we all got to know each other, we realized we had much more in common than Southern food. In fact, their family mirrors mine in many waysboth the Neelys and the Deens faced challenges growing up, including losing parents at an early age. And both clans knew the value of hard work and the joy associated with providing something better for our children. Did I mention we also like to eat?

When my television producer and dear friend, Gordon Elliott, met the Neelys, he was instantly smitten. Mark Schneider, Gordons partner at Follow Productions, flew to Memphis to see the Neelys in action and immediately called Gordon and said hed found the perfect couple to star in a television series of their own. I wasnt the least bit surprised. And thats how Down Home with the Neelys was born.

Pat and Gina didnt go looking for televisionit found them. Thank goodness! Now we all get to share in the warmth and laughter and good food that inspired Down Home with the Neelys the television series, and now this lovely cookbook. With the following recipes, we are all given a place at the Neely family table, and its a seat I would take any day of the week. So what are yall waiting for? Turn the page and dig in. Their recipes and heartwarming family anecdotes will fill your stomach full.

Gina: We started out as friends, but I knew that wouldnt last, because I was attracted to that man.

Ginas Introduction

HEY, EVERYONE,

First of all, I want to thank you for reading our book and watching our show. We had no idea what we were getting into when we let television cameras into our house, butyou know what?its been fun. The show has allowed us to share our recipes with a lot of people, many of whom now come and visit us at the restaurants. Its also allowed us to tell some of our story.

We decided to put it all down on paper because folks kept asking. Theyd send us letters, asking for our recipes. Theyd send us e-mails, asking how we met. So we figured, give the public what they want. And thats pretty much how Down Home (the book) was born.

Pat and I have known each other a long, long time. I still remember the day we met, how awkward it was for the two of us. I mean, there was a spark for sure, but we were teenagers standing in a high-school hallway, and we really didnt know what to say (hint for you guys out there: start with Hello!). I think I finally broke the ice, and then Pat asked me for my number.

We started out as friends, but I knew that wouldnt last, because I was attracted to that man. I also knew the feeling was mutual. So we began dating. Dating brought the usual ups, downs, and separations, but as fate would have it, we were both grown up and single when we renewed our acquaintance. This time, we decided to marry. With such a long history, youd think I knew what I was getting into. I had no idea what I was getting into, girl. But I was about to find out.

If you really want to get to know your spouse or partner, go into business with him. Youll see all his colors, which is what happened with Pat and me. I learned a lot about Pat and his family.

The Neelys work, laugh, love, and play harder than any family I have ever met. Their path has not been an easy one, which makes their success even more extraordinary. They are a tight-knit clan, and I had to fight for my place in this raucous group of five brothers, one sister, and one protective mother hen. I did it with Pats helpindeed, with help from the entire Neely family.

I learned about commitment from the Neelys. I learned about dedication. And I learned about loyalty. The Neelys do not walk away from anything. If theres a problem, they fix it. If theres a spat, they make up. And if someone is in trouble, theyll drop what theyre doing to lend a hand.

Pat has been there for me since day one. As a couple, weve been through good times and bad. As a person, Ive had my doubts (I know you might not believe it, watching the show, but theyve been there, trust me). All I can say is, if not for God, Pat, and my family standing beside me, Lord knows where Id be.
