Acknowledgments We are unable to give the original designers their much deserved credit as the projects in this book originated in the 1920s to 1950s. Although the records of the original books don't exist, we believe the designers were all part of an in-house Coats & Clark design team. Their exquisite designs are even more incredible since they were more limited than we are in the colors and types of yarns and threads. We'd like to acknowledge the special designers who have re-designed our vintage projects. Their names are featured with each project pattern herein. Our technical editor, Amy Polcyn, has made sure that the new patterns are written in a completely understandable style for today's crocheter. Our illustrator, Karen Manthey, has provided diagrams that are clear and precise. We appreciate their special talents. Today our in-house design team continues to bring the best of yesterday's and today's needlecrafts along with the most contemporary product ideas to yarn users. We loved pouring over our archives to bring Vintage Crochet for Your Home to life and appreciate our wise, knowledgeable partners at Krause Publications. Coats & Clark Design Team USA: Nancy J. As a crocheter you have a distinct advantage in creating a home with warmth, originality and extra personality. As you look through the projects in this book, you will find ideas that crocheters from the 1920s to 1950s created using old brands such as Chadwick's and Clark's O.N.T. We've resurrected these designs from the Coats & Clark archives and asked designers to update the written patterns in today's vernacular and in yarns and threads that are readily available. You'll be able to give your home one-of-a-kind style with projects for every room in the house. We've included projects for the kitchen, dining and entertaining, bed and bath and, of course, a wonderful collection of throws and afghans. Whether you enjoy outfitting your rooms in totally retro style or are just adding a beautiful accent from the past to traditional or modern dcor, Vintage Crochet for Your Home is full of ideas. You'll find crocheted accessories that will give your home more character, and you'll love being surrounded by these original pieces. If your crochet skills need a little freshening up or you are new to crochet, we've included fully illustrated Crochet Basics in the back of this book for easy reference. BEGINNER | Perfect for new crocheters, these projects use basic stitches and minimal shaping. | EASY | These projects use basic stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shaping and finishing. It's easy! | INTERMEDIATE | These projects use a variety of techniques, such as basic lace patterns or mid-level shaping, and are great for learning new skills. |
History of Coats & Clark With a rich heritage beginning in the early 1800s, Coats history is interwoven with many key innovations and historic events dating back to the beginnings of the industrial revolution. With nearly 200 years of history to share, we have selected a few interesting facts and images from our archives that we thought you would enjoy. 1812 The Clarks opened the first factory for making cotton sewing thread in Paisley, Scotland. A few years later, another cotton thread mill was opened by James Coats. 1830 The sons, James and Peter Coats, purchased their father's mill and, within a decade, J& P Coats Limited had expanded, with much of its production exported to America. Another member of the family, Andrew Coats, was sent to the U.S. 1864 George and William Clark, grandsons of James Clark, opened a cotton thread mill in Newark, New Jersey. 1864 George and William Clark, grandsons of James Clark, opened a cotton thread mill in Newark, New Jersey. | Next page
