Introduction
Thank you for purchasing my book of Candle Making Recipes. The fact that you have bought this book is already enough to know that you have a unique sense of style and a desire to explore that individualism. Read on and learn tips, methods, blends, recipes and how to avoid mishaps as well as a keen understanding of how these aromas can enhance your daily lives and do so in the delicious incomparable glow of candle light.
You are forgiven for thinking such results will cost you a small fortune. Yet you will be delighted to discover that the outlay will cost just a fraction of proprietary products and be at least equally effective.
If this is not the first time you have molded your own candles, within this book you will find new ideas and aromas to satisfy all tastes and choices. If you are a newbie, congratulations, the journey you are about to embark on is among the most satisfying, entertaining and pleasant and all without leaving your home.
Candles not only deliver that uniquely warm light but equally can be created to delight the olfactory sense for even longer than the wick continues to burn. Indeed it is these aromas which will show your unique skills and creativity, aromas which will result in a fragrance which is identifiably you.
So let us enter the world of candle making.
Chapter 1
Why Should You Make Your Own Candles?
Everyone loves candlelight. It can soothe and calm us. And can anyone deny the romantic aurora a lit candle provides? How often is the mood spoiled by the acrid smoke released when the candle is extinguished? Clearly nobody wants this unpleasant aroma to be the lasting memory of a candlelit evening. By the time you are finished reading this book this will be a problem of the past at least when it comes to candles!
The benefits of a pleasing aromatic environment are becoming more evident with every passing year. This is not aromatherapy but candle-therapy, a blending of two senses to produce an incomparable feeling of well-being and sheer bliss.
Making your own candles is simple, takes very little time, only uses items you already have at home, and can reduce your impact on the environment (in terms of packaging and transportation costs). At the end you have an item, which is wholly you in terms of aromas and colors, blending perfectly with your home.
We should not overlook the benefits of special aromas. You will find one which almost makes relaxation compulsive, another accompanies fine dining, and imagine the candle welcoming your partner home to the promise of a night of passion?
Advantages and Individuality
True to say that there are proprietary options out there, yet who wants to burn their hard-earned money on a product, which shows no imagination and initiative? Can you find that right blend? And even if you do, the color will probably clash with your dcor.
You already take great pride in the individuality of the dishes produced in your kitchen, the clothes you buy or make, or the dcor and furnishings of your home, all designed to reflect your particular style and personality. But why stop there? All the ingredients are readily available to produce your own candles and at a fraction of the price. Furthermore anyone can produce his or her own candles with little effort and skill.
Within the next few minutes you will already be planning your own individualized recipes. You would never want to wear the same outfit as your friends and colleagues, so why spend your money on candles with the same colors, shapes and aromas?
Preparation and Protection
Were only human and can hardly wait to see or try whatever we are making for ourselves. Every How To book worthwhile reading will stress that preparation is key. No house can stand without good foundations any more than tossing the ingredients into the mix will produce the culinary delight or enable you to burn a candle to banish the cares of the day.
First we have to create a double boiler, as it is not possible to melt the wax directly in the pan. So that old saucepan you could never find a use for is perfect, it just has to be large enough to comfortably hold the container in which the wax will be melted. This container is, once again, something you have held on to, as it will come in use. With the addition of those ubiquitous odd spoons for mixing and blending found in every home, you are almost ready to go. A candle thermometer is a useful tool, especially when it comes to melting points, available from the same craft store as the ingredients.
You should also collect an assortment of molds to hold your finished candles. Clearly these should not be flammable, should stand the heat of the melted wax and the flame when the candle is burning. The obvious assortment of small glass, metal, stone and marble containers readily come to mind but also think about items you would normally throw away old cups and even egg shells, for example.
All these should be cleaned thoroughly before use, ensuring they are also well rinsed and dried. A quick shopping trip (online works just as well) and we are ready to go.
A pound of wax will produce almost a pint of liquid when melted. Paraffin wax (melts at 120 to 140F), soy wax (170 to 180F), beeswax (145 to 160F) and even old candles are equally usable.
Choice is often down to personal preference. Although paraffin wax is the cheapest and the best for the beginner as it takes aromas and colors easily. Beeswax is more difficult to blend but does have a unique and subtle aroma all of its own. Whichever you choose cut the wax into small pieces, shavings work particularly well, as this encourages an even melting process and avoids marked fluctuations in temperature.
Important at no time during the melting process should you leave it unattended. Remember wax is flammable if not it would not make a very good candle!
