The Everything Series
Dear Reader,
Although they have been around since the thirteenth century, candles are making a modern-day comeback. Not only do bring light to darkness, but they have the power to alter moods, add warmth to a room, or bring a sense of celebration to any occasion.
If you love candles, making them at home is a great way to have an ample supply on hand all the time without spending a fortune. But in addition to the cost benefits, home candlemaking is a fun and entertaining way to spend an afternoon, whether youre by yourself or with friends. All you need to get started are a few basic materials, some instructions, and a sense of creativity. Making candles yourself also gives you the opportunity to be an artist, adding personal and unique touches to your creations.
In this book, Ive shared some of my favorite candles to make, as well as some fascinating bits of history about the craft. I hope that it will inspire you to create your own beautiful and unique candles.
Happy candlemaking!
M.J. Abadie

Acknowledgments
First, I would like to thank my dear friend, Jimmi Rushing, M.L.S., of Stephen F. Austin State Universitymaster researcher and Internet wizardfor her invaluable help in ferreting out much of the information about candles and their fascinating history included herein. In truth, I could not have written this book without her talent for locating information.
Next, my gratitude goes to the many candle crafters who have so generously shared their knowledge through their writings. Of these, special mention goes to the following wonderful and inspiring resources, whose books I highly recommend:
Betty Oppenheimer, author of The Candlemakers Companion; Sue Spear, author of Candlemaking in a Weekend; David Constable, author of Candlemaking: Creative Designs and Techniques; and Gloria Nicol, author of Candles: Illuminating Ideas for Creative Candlemaking and Enchanting Displays.
My appreciation goes also to Chris Santini, who was always there to say an encouraging word; to Anne Sellaro, my agent, for her continuing support of all my work; to Dr. John Torres, whose chiropractic expertise kept me functioning when tension took over; to my nephew Paul Abadie, for cheering me on; to Glen and Yvonne Grey, for their sturdy friendship through all weathers; and to Dr. Bruce Cox, my wonderful veterinarian, and his caring and compassionate staff, for seeing me through the death of my beloved companion cat of twelve years, Mushie, who returned to the great goddess Bast on November 3, 2000.
