Barcelona, with its population of 1.5 million people, is not only Spains second largestcity, but also the capital of Catalonia. Barcelonas people are proud to beCatalan, a separate nationality and autonomous community in the northeast ofSpain. Catalan is a Romance language and locals deeply appreciate it if you tryto speak some words in Catalan while you are in Barcelona. It might soundsimilar to Spanish, but Catalans insist that its not a Spanish dialect but adistinct language. Simply use some phrases such as Bon dia (Goodmorning) and Adu (Goodbye) and you will often be treated in amore respectful and friendlier way.

Barcelonawas originally called Barcino. It was founded by the Romans who set up a colonyat the end of the 1st century BC. This relatively small Roman colony had only afew thousand inhabitants and was surrounded by a defensive wall, the remains ofwhich can still be seen in the old Gothic Quarter of Barcelona.
Barcelonawas later ruled by Muslim forces for more than 200 years until the Christianreconquest. The fruitful late-medieval period, from the 13th to the 15thcenturies, established Barcelona's position as the economic and politicalcenter of the Western Mediterranean. Barcelonas Old Town (Gothic Quarter)bears witness to the splendor enjoyed by the city.
