Introduction
As a veterinarian, I am always thrilled when a pet owner brings in a puppy for its first visit. These owners are excited about their new pets, and it's exciting for me because I get to teach them how to properly care for their new family members.
Raising a puppy can be fun, but at times it can also be challenging and frustrating. Sometimes owners, armed with incorrect information, have a difficult time raising the new puppy. Most don't have any idea what to expect from their new pet.
I believe that veterinarians should take time on the first visit or even before the first visit to properly discuss with the new or prospective owner exactly what to expect that important first year! A new puppy requires time, commitment, a lot of love and attention, and often a sizable financial investment.
No one should own a puppy without being fully prepared for this awesome responsibility. To help better prepare you for the trials and tribulations of puppy-hood, I wrote Your Puppy's First Year. Unlike some puppy books, this book is written by a practicing veterinarian who deals with new puppy owners' questions and concerns on a daily basis. I've tried to cover as many topics as possible; ideas for what to include in the book have come from the numerous questions, comments, and suggestions often posed by new puppy owners. An important pan of this book is the discussion concerning what it costs to raise a puppy and how to afford the care a new puppy requires. While this information might discourage some of you from owning a puppy, my intention is to better prepare you for those unexpected expenses that invariably arise after purchasing that new puppy.
Puppies are fun and playful and bring a smile to our faces. Enjoy your new puppy, and do a good job raising him. When you need advice, don't hesitate to turn to Your Puppy's First Year for answers.
