Chapter 1
The Home Health Aide Exam
Chapter Summary
Picture 4Picture 5
This chapter introduces you to the certification process for home health aides and shows you how to use this book to help you prepare for the exam for Certified Home Health Aides.
In this day and age of professionalism, many careers that years ago didn't require much expertise now require not only formal training, but also some type of recognized certification. This is particularly true for many health professions, including home health aide. One problem for a prospective home health aide like you is that, for now, there are no national regulatory standards. This book is based on the National Standards for certified home health aides (HHAs), but those standards are still being evaluated and for now are voluntary. This means that the states are still in charge of regulating HHAs, and in some cases the requirements vary even within a state. So you could find a variety of training and certification requirements, depending on where you live. Whether you are engaged in a training program to be a certified home health aide or simply considering the profession, this book can help you, but you will also need to contact state or local agencies to find out about the requirements in your area.
Page 1/2
Finding Out about Certification Requirements
The first thing you should do, if you want to become a HHA, is to contact your local community or state health agency and get the certification requirements. You can find these agencies listed in the blue (government) pages of your phone book. Another option is to contact an employment agency or the healthcare facility you want to work for, since they will often be able to guide you through the training and certification requirements. See Chapter 8 for an outline of some of the current trends in HHA certification, which will give you an idea of what to expect.
Training
Once you know what you have to do to be certified in your state, you can begin to plan your HHA study program. Go to a local job counseling center, state employment agency, or private healthcare job placement service to get information about how to get the training you need to become a HHA. Many healthcare agencies will provide you with the required training. It may also be possible for you to prepare on your own and demonstrate your competence by taking the written and/or practical exam. Whether you're involved in a training class or working on your own, you should be using textbooks and other materials that will train you in the most important skills a HHA needs. Such books will be available in public libraries and college bookstores; job search agencies may also have some supplemental materials available.
