CONTENTSINTRODUCTION
The fact that you have picked up this book and are reading this (willingly, I hope!) means you already have some interest in healthy living and delicious recipes. Phew! Let me just wipe the sweat from my brow.
But I understand that this doesnt mean youre a juicing pro or even know what juicing really entails. Its all good, though; Ive written this book with you in mind. The following pages provide easy-to-understand descriptions and explanations of all things to do with juices, smoothies and healthy snacks, as well as about a hundred kick-ass recipes that everyone can appreciate and actually make. If you dont know the first thing about juicing, you will soon. (Then youll learn the second, and third and fourth) If you are already pretty savvy with a juicer and blender, I bet I can still teach you a thing or two, or at the very least give you some new recipe ideas. Now back to the shindig.
Okay, hold up the shindig for two seconds. I just wanna say that I highly recommend buying organic. Organic produce supports honest farmers and environmental sustainability and gets you the most delicious fruits and veggies on earth. At the same time, I understand organic is more expensive and not in everyones budget, and I mean, youre already reading a book about juicing so youre way ahead of where most people are athigh five, buddy. But if you can afford to buy organic, do it. Then you dont have to peel your produce; just give it a rinse to get that dirt off.
Back to the shindig. We need to first ask why anyone should actually care about making and drinking juices and smoothies. Im not going to turn this into an encyclopedia of nutrition because (1) I am not equipped, (2) all that info exists on the Internet and in other books already and (3) you probably dont want that much detail anyway. But if you are one of those people that want all the nitty gritty deets (that makes two of us), check out my list of recommended resources (), and other info in the back of the book, which I recommend reading first anyway.
JUICE
Lets start with juice. When talking about juice in this book, I am referring to the liquid we can extract from fruits and vegetables.
This liquid is full of all the nutrients and vitamins that are in the plants being juiced; the rest is just fiber. When you juice fruits and veggies, you are essentially squeezing all the nutrition out of them (which is found in the juice), leaving behind only fiber. Heres where you might ask, But isnt fiber good for me? Youre right. A diet high in fiber is a plan for a healthy gut and long life. Having said that, as long as youre already eating a high-fiber diet, adding juices to it is an excellent thing to do. The benefits of juicing are numerous and substantial.
Without the fiber to digest, your body can literally absorb the nutrients right away I mean, in like 15 minutes all that good stuff will be flowing through your blood. When you juice fruits and veggies, your body can absorb more nutrition than if you simply ate the same amount of plants, and you can also consume more. For example, when was the last time you ate a pound of carrots for breakfast? (If you say this morning, you deserve a round of applause because you are officially the carrot champion.) But Im guessing youll say never. No one wants to chew that much, and even if you did, your mouth does not have the capability to break down the vitamins and nutrients as well as a juicer. You can easily drink the juice of a pound of carrots and instantly and effortlessly absorb all the benefits just by swallowing. (Probably not enough to be harmful, but Im a firm believer in Better safe than sorry.)
SMOOTHIES
What about smoothies? The difference between smoothies and juice is that with smoothies, you are not taking out the fiber, youre simply blending up fruits and vegetables with water or other liquid until theyre smooth and drinkable.
Fiber is a necessary part of a healthy diet: it keeps everything moving and it sustains a happy digestive system and that in itself basically keeps the rest of your body happy and humming. The benefits of smoothies are a bit simpler to explain because Im assuming you already know that eating plants is good for you (I almost typed pants there good thing I caught that because I dont think trousers contain much vitamin C). Getting back on track, smoothies are literally straight-up plants; all you are doing is blending them until smooth. The advantage to this is less work for your digestive system. Theres no physical breakdown required because a smoothie is already in the form your stomach wants it: liquid. These drinks make up the bulk of my diet.
With smoothies, youre skipping a step and thus getting the nutrients and vitamins in the fruits and veggies absorbed faster. Thumbs up.
CHAPTER 1
SWEET JUICES
Everybody loves fruit juice. Its sweet, fresh as well as refreshing and great for you! So with that logic, I think this will probably be a very popular chapter. You can juice almost any fruit (except for bananas and avocados) into an incredibly delicious elixir of health and glowing color. A lot of my sweet juice recipes also include dark leafy greens and non-sweet fruits (think cucumbers, bell peppers and lemons), not only to balance out the sweetness but also to add extra nutrition.
For example, kale is mega-good for your bod and if I can sneak it in with some pineapple, Im gonna. Keep in mind that when you juice plants, youre taking out the fiber. Fiber slows down digestion, assimilation and absorption so when you get rid of it, you speed all that stuff up. This is the main benefit to making and drinking juice, but for those of us with sensitive blood sugar levels, it can be an issue because the sugars in the juice are almost instantly absorbed. Personally this is not a problem for meI can drink a huge glass of pure watermelon juice and be begging for morebut every body is different so I thought itd be wise to mention this. Again, as a reminder, do not juice seeds as they can be toxic!

APPLES ARE GREAT FOR THE SKIN, AND LIMES ARE TERRIFIC FOR YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. I THINK THIS RECIPE IS REMINISCENT OF LIMEADE. 2 green apples 2 limes 1 cucumber Wash, peel and chop the produce as needed, removing any seeds from the fruit. Put everything through your juicer, sip, get the glow.
