Introduction
Don Quixote is a work that has universal and contemporary appeal.
These notes are designed to introduce you to this novel, to suggest a few interpretations of Cervantes' work in particular instances, and to remark on the author's technique in order to familiarize you with the material itself. Short chapter summaries, however, cannot include the gentle ironies, the ridiculous comic situations, the rollicking dialogues, and above all, the memorable characterizations of Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza. To fully appreciate Don Quixote the delightful details of episode and dialogue, character and ideas one must go to the novel itself.
Don Quixote, although considered a great classic today indeed the first modern novel was a best seller the first year it appeared. Today it is still a best seller, and although Cervantists have filled libraries with critical commentaries and erudite analyses for fifteen generations, the book can be enjoyed by readers of all intellectual levels. Don Quixote includes drolleries of the sort that silent film audiences expect, characterizations that are spontaneous and untouched by the kind of heavy-handed artist who tries to make his readers weep or guffaw. It etches such strong images that the hack-mounted knight and the fatbodied squire on his ass will remain impressed in the mind of the reader throughout his life, enabling him to recognize and admire other windmill-tilting Quixotes and comic men of practical affairs who are the Sancho Panzas today.
