CHANGE FOR CHOCOLATE
Math isnt just about questions on quizzes and
homework. It shapes the entire world around us. Want to know
how? Simply head to the store!
Thats where Alex and his cousin Joe hope to go. Theyre craving
candy! Alex asks their grandma if they can walk to the candy shop
on the corner. She agrees. Of course, she also makes them promise
they wont spoil their appetite before dinner.
The cousins gather some change
for chocolate. Alex empties his
piggy bank. He has quarters,
dimes, nickels, and
pennies. That should be enough to
satisfy each cousins sweet tooth.
Alex and Joe face some tough
but tasty choices at the candy
shop. In the end, they decide on
chocolate- covered raisins. They also
want chocolate- covered almonds. Raisins
are $5.99 per pound. Almonds are $7.99 per pound.
Alex and Joe scoop pound (227 grams) of raisins into a bag. How much
will this cost? What if they decide to spend the rest of their
money on the biggest bag of almonds they can afford? How
much would it weigh? (Round to the nearest hundredth of a pound.)
DO THE MATH!
You head to the vending machine at the front of the candy shop. For 25, you
can enjoy a big, juicy gumball. The problem is that you have a dollar bill. And
the machine only takes quarters. You ask the store owner to give you change
for $1. He hands you a dime and three nickels. The rest of your change is in
quarters. How many gumballs can you get?

PAY FOR A WINTER WARDROBE
Brrr! Quinn's teeth are chattering as she hurries into
the mall. It wont be long before snow starts falling! Thats why
Quinn and her dad are going shopping. They plan to stock up on warm
winter clothes.
Quinn cant wait to hit her favorite stores. Yet she has to pay attention to
prices. Her dad says she has $150 to spend on a new winter wardrobe.
Quinns rich, right? Well, it depends. Winter fashion can be expensive!
Quinn needs more sweaters. Her dad says she could use at least two new pairs of
long pants. She also has to get a scarf, a hat, and a coat.
Quinn keeps cost in mind as she moves through the mall. First, she buys two
stylish sweaters. One is $16.99. The other is $14.39. Next, she purchases a hat
