Foreword
Albert E. Stone
Ben Orlove's In My Father's Study is in revealing and necessary ways a most unusual experiment in autobiography, perhaps the most singular so far in Singular Lives: The Iowa Series in North American Autobiography. Indeed, for many this story may not seem to be autobiography at all. Almost from the start, it can be read as biography, the life-story of an immigranta representative and appealing figure but quite unknown in the annals of American social historywritten by his son. The writing, begun shortly after the father's death, exhibits little of either the filial piety and sentimentality or the scarcely veiled resentments and even outright hatred that often suffuse such activity. Instead, Ben has entered, through the actual doorway of his father Robert's California study, into half a century of his father's experiences, thoughts, and emotions. He does so with wry sensitivity and loving detachment. Moreover, Ben re-creates his own self along with a richly detailed family history. Though only one among other Orloves and Cohens, Ben emerges as the son who is a modest, masterful teller of two storiesand the artificer of his own identity.
Robert Orlove's life in America, like that of the others in his Eastern European Jewish family who settled and struggled in New York and Chicago, is only in detail and nuance different from the lives of many of the 35 million Europeans who moved to the United States in the great migration of 18401930. But every reader of this book will realize that
