Alfred W. Lawson (18691954) was a professional baseball player, inventor of the airliner, leader of a movement in the 1930s calling for the abolition of banks and interest, and founder of a utopian community, the so-called Des Moines University of Lawsonomy. This unusual institution, constantly embroiled in controversy in the 1940s and early 1950s, was dedicated not only to teaching Lawsons novel religious and scientific ideas but also to initiating a reform of human nature.

PREFACE
Alfred William Lawson has been much on my mind since I began the research for this book a full dozen years ago, but he has been in my mind far longer than that. My awareness of Lawson dates back to the 1940s and early 1950s, when I was growing up in Ames, Iowa, and Lawson was promulgating his unusual doctrine of "Lawsonomy" at the so-called Des Moines University of Lawsonomy (DMUL). So great was the uproar set off in Des Moines that word of it even reached my young ears thirty miles away in Ames.
On trips to Des Moines I also saw the mysterious "university" many times before it was razed in 1955, one year after Lawson's death. Sequestered behind high fence and locked gate, DMUL threw off dark hints of menace and nefarious goings-on or so it seemed to my impressionable adolescent mind. To this day, DMUL remains deeply incised in my memory, the only landmark I can still recall from that remote day before the boomers and the boosters had begun to transform the face of Des Moines.
