When, if ever, does a thought cross the line and become a crime?
RAW DEAL: The True Story of the NYPDs Cannibal Cop is the memoir of Gil Valle, written with co-author Brian Whitney. It is part the controversial saga of a man who was imprisoned for thought crimes, and a look into an online world of dark sexuality and violence that most people dont know exists, except maybe in their nightmares.
In 2012, Valles wife thought her husband was having an affair because he was spending so much time on the internet, so she decided to sneak a peek at what he was doing. What she saw horrified her. Her husband, she believed, was making plans with others to abduct, torture and ... eat women, including her. He was subsequently arrested atgunpoint by FBI agents and tossed into solitary confinement.
After Valles arrest, worldwide media coverage exploded in a frenzy of lurid tabloid headlines and stories about the cannibal cop. But heres the fascinating part; there was no such plan in reality. Valle was simply engaging in his own private fantasies, albeit fantasies that are abhorrent and grotesque, with others in online chatrooms. But he was charged for his thought crimes, and faced life in prison. He was convicted by a jury and incarcerated for 21 months until the judge in his case, overturned the jury decision and he was eventually exonerated of all charges.
RAW DEAL: The True Story of NYPDs Cannibal Cop delves into the dark world of Valles violent sexual fantasies. But it is also the tale of his ordeal from his arrest and onslaught of media attention, the devastatingly embarrassing trial and relationship with his female attorney, his wrongful conviction and nearly two years of incarceration, his battle to be free, and his life since.
RAW DEAL will certainly test the boundaries of any reader. But it also raises the question of when does thought become a crime? Valles story will challenge the readers beliefs about free speech, the right to privacy, and governments role in watching over us.

Publishers Note

When Gil Valle and Brian Whitney approached us about publishing RAW DEAL, we were told that Gil wanted to tell his story his way. Our concern was that his way included graphic descriptions of the sexual fantasies that landed Gil in hot water in the first place and included the abduction, torture and murder of women, as well as cannibalism. As with most of the general population, we find this sort of objectification and treatment of women, or any human beings, to be repugnant even as a fantasy.

However, we also note, that such fare constitutes a large portion of the content of many thrillers and mysteries both in print and as filmthe dubious distinction being that those are works of fiction, as opposed to one mans online thoughts. It can also be said that writers and readers of true crime, as well as those who work in the television and film industry that portray real crime and criminals, rely on this sort of content for their occupations and leisure time. As such, we feel that moralizing about Gils predilections to be somewhat duplicitous by anyone else who benefits from the depiction or description of criminal acts no matter how they attempt to couch it.

Yet, we may have still hesitated to publish this story, except for one sentence the authors included in their proposal: When, if ever, does thought cross the line and become a crime? How many of us have ever thought about, or considered, an action that if made a reality would constitute a crime? Now what would you say if for having had that thought, but never having acted on it, the FBI or some other law enforcement agency arrested you at gunpoint in your home in front of your neighbors? And as a result, you lost your job and friends, and that your life became fodder for sensationalized media reports that made you an international laughing stock? And that you were then prosecuted, convicted and sent to prison? For a thought, a fantasy, a fiction.

In a free society that prides itself on the constitutional right to expression without government interference, its a serious question that goes beyond Gil Valle and his online fetishes. What about the person who belongs to online terrorist groups but never commits a violent act? Or uses the internet to look up how to make a bomb out of curiosity? What about authors of thrillers and mysteries who Google criminal acts to add realism to their stories? At what point do we want law enforcement to be spying on us and at what point do we want them to act?

In other words, when, if ever, does a thought cross the line and become a crime? It is worth thinking about, and so we bring you RAW DEAL: The Untold Story of NYPDs Cannibal Cop.

Good men with the misfortune of being aroused by socially unacceptable images carry a heavier burden than most; they must make do with fantasy, talk, or simulation, or they risk rejection, humiliation, and disclosure to third parties if they ask their partners to try or simulate some of their fantasied activities. Prologue

The plan is coming along way better than I could have possibly imagined. For once, I found a guy to work with that handles himself professionally. I am getting tired of playing around with stupid bullshit.

We kept going back and forth on who it would be, but we finally picked out our target. Shes beautiful, incredibly sweet, and vulnerable. She could not be more perfect for what we have planned.

There are always potential issues to worry about in a situation such as this, of course. Planning is of the utmost importance.

One potential problem is the fact that she knows me. She knows me quite well, actually. Considering she will be dead soon, this should not be much of an issue but still we will have to be cautious in our approach.

I met her in college and have known her for about ten years. We even used to hang out a bit from time to time. But so what? I will just use the fact that I know her to my advantage. She lives close by, all by herself. When I show up randomly at her place just to say hey, she wont even think twice about letting me in. Its just me, your old friend Gil. Nothing to see here, nothing to worry about. Just open the door. She never found me threatening. Most people dont.

Of course, it is going to be an unannounced visit. We dont want anyone to know that I am going to see her. It is extremely important that, when she vanishes, my name will not be on anyones lips. Once I get inside, I will say my Hellos and How have you beens, then I will knock her out. Even this detail has to be planned, of course. If you try and knock someone out and dont do it right, then you are in a whole mess of shit right off the jump. I thought of using chloroform, but my partner suggested a quick shot to the neck with a stun gun to incapacitate her. I like that idea. It makes me hard.

Over time, we got the whole thing down cold. We planned out every single step. In excruciating detail, we talked about how we would make her completely disappear. No stone was left unturned, and every potential issue was discussed in order to cover our asses and to avoid detection by witnesses and the police.

The hard part is going to be getting her into my white van. Carrying an unconscious woman over your shoulder and throwing her in the back of a van tends to get a little attention. Not to mention that limp bodies are heavier than they appear. Once we get her inside the van, we will take her to my secluded house in the mountains that is about two hours away from her place. Once she is there it is going to be cake. The scene is totally deserted up there. Nobody is around for about a mile and a half. I spent the last several months converting the basement into a soundproofed torture chamber. I had a rotisserie apparatus measured out perfectly to her height. In the backyard, there is a large pit that we will use when it is time for the barbecue. She is going to wish she was never born. That part is going to be fun, but we still have a little work to do before we can start to enjoy ourselves.

I thought I was meticulous, but my partner has me beat. That dude is all over every little detail. He came up with all of the materials that we would need. We decided to go with zip ties and a ball gag to keep her quiet and compliant when she is in the van. If she wakes up before we got to the mountain house and causes us a problem, we will just keep her in line with the stun gun. Most people quiet down pretty quickly when the stun gun comes into play.
