About the Authors
Eddie Jones is the head coach of the England Rugby Union team and led them to the 2019 World Cup final. He took Australia to the 2003 World Cup final as well, and masterminded Japans famous victory over South Africa in 2015 one of the biggest upsets in sport. He was also the assistant coach for South Africa when they won the 2007 World Cup.
Donald McRae is an award-winning author of twelve books. He has won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award twice. He is a three-time Sports Interviewer of the Year winner and has also been Sports Feature Writer of the Year on three occasions, most recently in 2018 and 2019, for his work in the Guardian.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This book is full of great memories and has made me realize, once again, just how fortunate I have been to spend my life in rugby with so many great people. Thank you to all my former teammates, my former and fellow coaches and, especially, to all the wonderful players Ive been fortunate enough to work with over the years. You have enriched my life.
I would like to say a special thanks to those who were kind enough to relive some of their own memories while we worked on the book Steve Borthwick, Neil Craig, Frank Dick, Fourie du Preez, Bob Dwyer, Glen Ella, George Gregan, Junichi Inagaki, Rod Kafer, Michael Leitch, Ewen McKenzie, David Pembroke, Ian Ritchie, Mark Sinderberry, John Smit and Chris Webb.
Craig Livingstone, my agent, was instrumental in making the book happen. Thanks, mate.
Thanks to everyone at Pan Macmillan for all their support and belief in the book. In particular, Robin Harvie, my editor, has backed this project from the outset and helped us throughout the three years weve worked on it. Matthew Cole and Laura Carr have also done great work and thanks to Penny Isaac for her copy-editing.
I do owe David Pembroke (Pemby) a special thanks. Our partnership stretches back over 20 years and, as the commitments of the World Cup closed in, I handed over to him to work with Don McRae to fine tune and check everything. He was, as always, invaluable in helping us find the right stories and the right words. Thanks, mate. As always, I appreciate your help.
And Don. Thank you so much for your professionalism, perseverance and curiosity. You have done a superb job in helping me tell my story.
Finally, I would like to thank my family. Without them, I would have accomplished nothing.
