In 1984, four comedians Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Rob Reiner, and Harry Shearer unleashed This Is Spinal Tap , the worlds first mock-rockumentary and a joke that has lasted into the 21st century and inspired a generation of imitations. Now, award-winning film journalist John Kenneth Muir ( An Askew View: The Films of Kevin Smith ) escorts the reader through a quarter-century of heavy metal laughs, offering a detailed history of the films genesis and an up-close look at the reasons why this beloved rock-and-roll movie comedy has endured for so long, and even met acceptance in the rock-and-roll culture it lampoons. Features interview material with the cinematographer, editor, and some supporting cast members of This Is Spinal Tap as well as King of Nostalgia Joe Franklin.

CHAPTER 1 Too Much F-ing Perspective Remembering This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

The greatest rock n roll band in the world is the Rolling Stones, at least according to Gimme Shelter (1970).

But Spinal Tap is still the loudest....

A full quarter-century after its genesis, Rob Reiners remarkable silver screen directorial debut, This Is Spinal Tap , remains an inescapable, nay insurmountable bump on the American pop culture highway.

This eighty-two-minute music-themed comedy from the mid-1980s yet shines, not only as an authentic Generation X touchstone but also as the undeniable gold standard of the cinematic format termed the mockumentary, or what Tap coarchitect Christopher Guest often dubs a documentary-style comedy.

What this description means is that This Is Spinal Tap poses as an authentic documentary, and is composed and edited in the cinema verit school down to the inclusion of archival footage in the B-roll (supplemental footage intercut with the main shots during interviews), confessional one-on-one interviews, and the sense that everything is unfolding before the camera as live. But dont be fooled. Every moment in the film is purely fictional, made up from whole cloth: a mock (meaning aped or simulated) reality.

Rock n roll movies such as Mark Wahlbergs Rock Star (2002); parodies of the music industry including the Chris Rock vehicle CB-4 (1993); mock rockumentaries like the Canadian FUBAR (2002); and real documentaries such as Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2009) attempt to recapture Spinal Taps revolutionary, inspired alchemyat least after a fashionbut somehow, they never quite pull it off.

As movie critic Patrick Douglas noted in May 2005, the Reagan-era collaboration between comedian-actors Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Rob Reiner, and Harry Shearer is likely to remain forever the be-all and end-all of rock movies. Consequently, This Is Spinal Taps accolades are nearly too numerous to catalog. But heck, lets give it a whirl.

In 1992, Entertainment Weekly ranked the Rob Reiner film as the third funniest in cinema history. It placed behind Airplane! (1980) and Some Like It Hot (1959) and nosed ahead of Woody Allens Academy Award winner Annie Hall (1977). The magazine wrote: First time director Rob Reiners knowing mockumentary of a band of heavy-metal bozos gets everything righteven tiny details like the contents of a backstage deli tray. That the songs... are this clever and genuine bespeaks the creators grasp of the essential ingredient for classic satire: a deep affection for the subject of ridicule

In 2002, the National Film Registry in the Library of Congress officially added This Is Spinal Tap to its rolls, honoring the production as one of the select few titles in a hundred years of moviesalongside such luminaries as From Here to Eternity (1953), In the Heat of the Night (1967), and Alien (1979)to boast a critical trifecta: aesthetic, cultural, and historical significance.
