Foreword

the generation that carried on the war has been set apart by its experience. Through our great good fortune, in our youth our hearts were touched with fire. It was given to us to learn at the outset that life is a profound and passionate thing.
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., spoke these words at a Memorial Day gathering in Keene, New Hampshire, in 1884. They reflected his experiences in the Civil War, which had concluded nineteen years earlier. The eloquent, erudite Holmes summarized the feelings of generations of men before and since who marched off to war.
War experiences are not easy to write about. The stories arise from a need to express emotions that perhaps cannot be shared easily except with those who have had similar experiences. Stanley Westbrook Smith and his generation left their mark on a war that ended more than forty-five years ago and forever changed world history. It is his own story that he tells here, an exceptional account of a prisoner of war. It is a history that provides a sense of time, a sense of place.
In the original foreword to the journal, he states his goal in writing this account, which covers three years and ten months of his life:

One person's contribution to the war effort in World War II generally had no real bearing on the ultimate outcome, and the detailed experiences set forth in this narrative in no way violate that premise. My objective here, however, is to preserve information time has a way of eroding from memory. How kindly the material is treated over the years is not important, nor will it especially concern those of us who were granted the extraordinary privilege of returning to a rebirth of freedom.

The following pages fulfill this objective the preservation of a segment of that war and one man's experiences when, in Holmes's words, "life was a profound and passionate thing."
