Acknowledgments
A project of this kind is never possible without the aid of many people. I am especially indebted to Mrs. Alice Williams and her son Albert Williams, of Fort Worth, who provided not only the original manuscript and letter collections but also constant encouragement and assistance that have been invaluable. Other members of the Van Zandt family helped in collecting letters and papers. Mrs. William P. Cranz, Mrs. Edwin E. Bewley and Mr. and Mrs. Tolbert C. Smith provided many of the family portraits. I also wish to thank the Research Committee of the University of Texas at Arlington for providing funds for travel and research expenses. The University of Texas at Arlington also allowed me a reduced teaching schedule in order to expedite the final preparation of the manuscript. The staff of the University of Texas at Arlington Library has given every assistance in finding materials and much thanks is due to Miss Francine Morris of the Inter-Library Loan Department for securing material not locally available. The staffs of the Texas Christian University Library at Fort Worth, Texas, and the Texas State Library and the University of Texas Archives at Austin, Texas, were also helpful is providing information, as were Miss Kendall Cram of the Tennessee State Library and Archives, and Mr. Clifford K. Shipton, archivist at the Harvard University Library. Mr. Sylvan Dunn and the staff of the Southwest Collection at Lubbock, Texas, provided frequent assistance. The officers and staff of the Fort Worth National Bank were also helpful in providing information and photographs. Mr. Jenkins Garrett, of Fort Worth, very courteously offered

the use of his fine collection of Texana. Mrs. G. Y. Swickard, Miss Francine Morris, and Mrs. Charles Blankenship helped in proofreading the manuscript. Very special thanks is due to my husband who endured, without complaint, late meals and a disorganized household while the book was in progress. Without his unfailing help and encouragement, the work would never have been completed.

Introduction
In the summer of 1929, Mrs. Alice Van Zandt Williams, of Washington, D. C., returned to her parents' home at Fort Worth, Texas. The purpose of her journey was twofoldto visit her parents and to convince her ninety-three-year-old father, Major K. M. Van Zandt, to write his recollections of his long and exciting life. As a result of Mrs. Williams' insistence, Major Van Zandt spent each afternoon of the summer dictating a manuscript. The plan followed was both simple and efficient. Van Zandt would return home from his office at the Fort Worth National Bank at noon, have lunch, and take a brief nap. Early in the afternoon a secretary from the bank would arrive with a dictation pad in hand. In response to Mrs. Williams' questioning, her father related the details of his experiences. The notes were transcribed the following morning and the work of the previous afternoon was read and checked for accuracy. The transcribed notes were then arranged in a basically chronological order. At the end of the summer Mrs. Williams returned to Washington with a two-hundred-page typescript.
Since her father's death in 1930, Mrs. Williams has added to her collection of family history. She already had a number of letters given to her by her grandmother, Frances Cooke Lipscomb Van Zandt, and she has searched government documents and archives collections for other material. Members of the Van Zandt family and friends, learning of Mrs. Williams' interest, have contributed pictures, letters, and papers concerning the Van Zandt family. The present collection consists of

over 2,000 pieces in addition to the original manuscript.
In November, 1963, Mrs. Williams asked Sandra Myres of The University of Texas at Arlington to look at the manuscript and other materials with a possible view toward a biography of K. M. Van Zandt. Rather than to rewrite the material, it was decided to keep Van Zandt's memoir intact, adding quotations from the letters and other documents, and annotating, through the use of footnotes, where appropriate. The book that follows is the result. The only changes made from the original manuscript are in a rearrangement of some of the material and in the addition of chapter headings, plus footnote documentation. Where additional comments seemed necessary for continuity, these have been added in brackets to set them off from the original text.
