Acknowledgments
This book evolved from my undergraduate honors thesis, and I would like to thank three advisors who were instrumental in making the thesis possible: Deborah Fink, Linda K. Kerber, and Lauren Rabinovitz. Deborah Fink, by serendipity or fate, steered me toward Luna Kellie as a thesis topic. I had told her I was interested in reform movements, the 1890s, and primary documents, and she suggested I look at Kellie's manuscripts. Deborah also provided me with valuable advice, expertise, and insight on rural women and Populism. As my thesis director, Linda Kerber supported my work at the Nebraska State Historical Society and was always available, despite a hectic schedule, to read drafts and provide helpful, incisive comments. Lauren Rabinovitz originally suggested I write an honors thesis and always provided supportive words and advice at the right moment. I also have Lauren to thank for bringing my work to the attention of Professor Albert E. Stone, who expressed an interest in publishing the memoirs in his Singular Lives series through the University of Iowa Press.
I would like to thank Holly Carver, managing editor of the University of Iowa Press, for her encouraging words and realistic insights and my copy editor, Mary Russell Curran, for her tireless work in pulling the final pieces of the manuscript together. It has been a pleasure to work with both of them. I would also like to thank Al Stone for taking an interest and including this work in his series.
John Schacht, historian and librarian at the University of

Iowa Libraries, was extremely helpful in directing me to source material. In addition, the staff at the Nebraska State Historical Society were always helpful and speedy in providing all the manuscripts and photos needed to complete the project. I thank them for all their assistance.
Special thanks go to my mother, Shirley Taylor Nelsen, who has always encouraged me to be the best that I can be, and to my friends Birgit Grimlund and Laura Ellis, who provided me with encouragement and support. Thanks also go to my father, Carl Nelsen, for his support and interest.
Finally, I would like to thank my husband, John Eiler. Life is a lot easier when you're building on bedrock.
