Forward Peak of Action
It's called "peak of action"an event frozen in time by the shutter of a newspaper photographer's camera. A split second earlier or later would miss it. Capturing that peak of action is the dream of every shooter, as newspaper photographers are called. Through the years they have been known as photogs, lensmen, and, more recently, as photo journalists. Apply any or all of those terms to Morey Engle, and they will fit.
In the almost fifty years I have worked with, around, and for Morey, I have never known anyone who had his instinct for capturing the peak of action. There's a photograph in this book that illustrates his hair-trigger instinct. Morey and I were walking away from the attempted destruction of the giant Grant Smelter stack in 1950. When the dust of the dynamite blast cleared, only half of the big brick stack had come down. Suddenly, we heard a sharp cracking noise. Morey whirled around and shot the picture with his Speed Graphic belly high, just as the remainder of the stack collapsed. He was the only one who got a picture.
