T HE INTRODUCTION that follows explains how I came to write this book; I should never have brought it to completion if I had not had support and help from a number of people whom this preface gives me the opportunity to thank.
The dedication to my wife, and to the children and grandchildren we have shared, is a testimony to the greatest debt of all, to a lifelong companion from whose trueness of judgment I have derived benefit in so many ways, not least as a perceptive critic both of historical interpretation and literary style.
For many years now I have benefited from the expert advice of my literary agent, Andrew Best, of Curtis Brown, as he has been, since this book was first published, my literary adviser. From our first discussions of my idea for such a study he steadily encouraged me to carry it out in full. When it was only half finished, he put his judgment to the test by securing leading publishing houses in the U.S.A. and Germany, as well as the U.K., to publish it.
I was fortunate that in all three cases the publishers showed as strong an interest in the content of the book as in its financial viability. My good fortune has extended to securing in Jonathan Segal and Stuart Proffitt outstanding editors on both sides of the Atlantic whose enthusiasm has been matched by a readiness to take any amount of trouble to get things right.
There would never have been a book at all if it had not been for the skill and patience of Mrs. Pamela Thomas and Mrs. Patricia Ayling in converting my illegible manuscript into the well ordered printout of the word processor. Mrs. Ayling has put me further in her debt by typing many drafts of this revised edition. I am no less indebted to my two American friends, Joe Slater and the late Shepard Stone, for help in securing support for research and secretarial expenses, including a generous grant from the Deutscher Stifterverband for which I am most grateful.
