Prince

Prince Roger Nelson; (Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1958 - Chanhassen, id, 2016.) Singer and songwriter. It was the great innovator of black music of their country during the 1980s, with such famous recordings as Purple Rain (1984) and Sign o 'the Times (1987), in which he combined the funk with psychedelia and pop. Self-taught musician, acquired great popularity thanks to his provocative and whimsical image. He published several works under the pseudonyms James Starr, Joey Coco, Christopher and Love Symbol, although the latter was partly due to contractual problems he decided to stop using the name Prince and caused his album The Black Album, which I was ready to go to market, it was vetoed by their record label and distributed only in pirated edition. Other notable works of his discography were Lovesexy (1988), Batman (1989), soundtrack of the homonymous film, or Diamonds and pearls (1991). In the mid-nineties he left his known pseudonym and insisted on being known as the only nickname of The Artist. In 2004, after also leave this nickname and stay away from the majors almost a decade, said his comeback album Musicology as Prince.

Origins

Prince was born on June 7, 1958 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His parents are Mattie Della and John Lewis Nelson, both African Americans. His sister Tika Evene was born in 1960. His father was a pianist and composer and jazz singer mother. He was named Prince, after the stage name of his father, Prince Rogers, who had a jazz group called Prince Rogers Trio.

He was born and used to have epileptic seizures when I was young. Prince wrote his first song, "Funk Machine," on the piano from his father when he was seven. At the same age, his parents divorced. The father left the family home but the piano had not led, which was used by Prince to learn to play by himself, learning tunes by ear as Batman television series. Later he learned to play other instruments at age 13 his father gave him an electric guitar, Prince learned to play quickly. In his high school years, he was with his friend Andr Cymone several groups, including two called Champagne and Grand Central. They played at school parties and the like but Prince did not sing because his voice was considered unfit to be presented in public. Time later, he would show that his singing talent was as wide as instrumentalist and composer. When she was 17 she met a musician named Pepe Willie, the husband of a cousin, who introduced him to the professional world and with which he made his first studio recordings. Shortly thereafter, an engineer named Chris Moon persuaded him to submit its models to some company: Warner Bros. chose, which gave him complete artistic and creative freedom.

First records

In 1978 he recorded his first album, For You, in which all the songs are composed by him and plays all the instruments you hear on the disc (in his own words, could play more than thirty instruments). Lover of the most diverse musical cocktails, became the great hope of black music after his album Prince (1979), which included I Wanna Be Your Lover, first topic of Prince to reach the charts, the classic "I Feel for you", which in 1984 consecration of the world would Chaka Khan to make a version, or guitarrera and provocative "Bambi" story of a female flirting with lesbian tendencies. In that year, it makes its first US tour, both solo opening act for Rick James. His first fixed band was composed by: Andr Cymone (bass), Gayle Chapman (keyboards), Dez Dickerson (guitar) and Matt Fink, aka Dr. Fink (keyboards)

His next album, Dirty Mind (1980) was a radical change of style. A disk just over half an hour with a rawer sound (the album is practically a model) and an absolutely provocative image, as it appears on stage in his underwear and hosiery under a threadbare coat. In addition, the letters went beyond the limits set in the sexual theme; issues such as Head and Sister nightmare became censors. His next album, Controversy (1981) was a new twist; this time the sexual themes give way to social themes in songs like Ronnie, Talk To Russia or Annie Christian. Because of the provocative new style of Prince, keyboardist Gayle Chapman leaves the live band and is replaced by Lisa Coleman, daughter of keyboardist young musicians who had no objection to music. By this time it begins to unleash their creativity with parallel groups like The Time, to the glory of his friend Morris Day (former drummer of Champagne) and that it would hotbed of valuable musicians and producers like Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Paul 'St. Paul 'Peterson.

First successes

The disc was then 1999 (1982) marked his first great popular success, and probably his first great masterpiece. The song that gave title to the disc (plagiarized by Phil Collins few years later as "Sussudio") became a classic, though the song he pulled himself to the charts was the second single, Little Red Corvette, theme basically aimed at white audience. Before the tour promoting the album, Andr Cymone left the band, frustrated by the egocentricity of Prince, and began a solo career as a solo artist and producer. He was replaced on bass by Mark Brown, renamed Brownmark. On this tour the band took first the name The Revolution.

Purple Rain

In 1984 he shot his first film, Purple Rain, whose soundtrack received a Grammy Award. In the same year is the famous album with the same title. The following year, in Around the world in a day, he played with new experimental psychedelia sounds touched. Its release coincided with the opening of his own record label, Paisley Park. In the summer of 1985 he made the film Under the Cherry Moon. A year later he released the LP Parade and shortly after Sign o 'the Times (1987), which became one of his best-selling albums.

Purple Rain (1984), disco and movie stardom massive accounted for Prince. The album sold over 15 million copies in the US alone, the film broke box office records and the subsequent North American tour, which began in Detroit in November 1984 and ended in Miami in April 1985, was seen by over a million of people. They began to rain awards: he won three Grammys for the album and an Oscar for Best soundtrack.

Then came the scandal The black album, an album that was released apparently in a pirate; Warner tried to destroy all copies, but some managed to slip and new recordings were made illegal. Later he recorded the soundtrack of Batman (1989) and the corresponding disk. With a different style edited a qualified pornographic actress Kim Basinger with video. Then he made the film and the album Graffitti bridge.

After Purple Rain

His next album, Around the World in a Day (1985) was a radical change of style with respect to 'Purple Rain'. Arab echoes, psychedelia and existentialism in a recording that left his record company and his followers, especially cattle with their previous album. Although he had not originally planned to Prince music disc, she made several as the colorist 'Raspberry Beret' or Nice live recording of 'America'. Today it is considered a transitional record [citation], yes, of highest quality. At this time he began to build, with revenues of 'Purple Rain', a large audiovisual complex called Paisley Park in Chanhassen, close to Minneapolis population. The building includes several recording studios and a large studio for film shooting, although the latter has been mainly used for concerts the Prince himself.

With his next recording, Parade (1986), Prince returned to the disc format's film 'Purple Rain'. Although the film called 'Under The Cherry Moon', shot in the French Riviera and directed by Prince himself was a menial and was a tremendous failure of critics and audiences, the disc accompanying soundtrack shows a Prince wildly experimental, alternating commerciality as the album's first single, the song 'Kiss' with disjointed melodies such as 'ANOTHERLOVERHOLENYOHEAD' or 'Life Can Be So Nice' and poetic lyricism in 'Do You Lie?' or 'Under The Cherry Moon'. The tour that accompanied the album was the first made by Europe and Japan and was also the first to include its legendary 'aftershows' concerts in small rooms early post large pavilion concert or stadium.
