The process of rearming the German military after the defeat of 1918 had in - photo 4
The
process
of rearming
the
German
military
after the defeat
of 1918 had in
reality begun in secret before the Treaty of
Versailles
had
been
signed.
The terms
imposed by the victorious Allies drastically
restricted
the
number
of
full-time
personnel
and
the
types
of weapons
allowed
to the Germans
but
both
were
circumvented
in a number
of ingenious
ways, often in direct contravention
of the
agreement
.
By 1933, and the ascension
to power of
Hitler
and
the
National
Socialists,
any
pretence that Germany was abiding by the
terms
of the
Treaty
was
dropped
and
within
two years
the firms
of Daimler-
Benz, Krupp, Maschinenfabrik
Augsburg-
Nurnberg
(MAN) and Rheinmetall-Borsig
had been asked to submit
plans for light
and medium tanks designs. These vehicles
were to replace
the Pzkpfw I and II light
tanks
then
in service,
which
were little
more
than
propaganda
tools,
and
be
capable
of taking
on the
current,
and
anticipated
future,
generations
of enemy
armoured
vehicles. The resulting
designs,
the Pzkpfw III and IV, were indeed a huge
step
forward
in the development
of the
main battle tank and were intended
to be
used in integrated
and massed
armoured
assaults
and not seen as an adjunct
to the
infantry. The lighter vehicle was originally
designated
as
the
37mm
Geschutz-
Panzerwagen
and
later
renamed
Zugfuhrerwagen,
or platoon commander's
vehicle . An important
stipulation
of the
initial specification
was that armour
was
to be provided
on all surfaces,
reflecting
the intention
that the tank was to operate
in the forward element of any assault
and
needed
to be protected
on all sides. The
choice of a suitable weapon was the cause
of controversy
with the Heereswaffenamt,
or army ordnance
department,
believing
that
a 3.7cm
gun
was
sufficient.
The
proponents
of armoured
warfare
and the
tank commanders
themselves
argued
for
the larger 5cm weapon but as the army's
main towed anti-tank
gun was based
on
the Rheinmetall
3.7cm L/45,
the view of
the Heereswaffenamt
prevailed .
After evaluating
the Krupp and Daimler-
Benz
designs
the
Heereswaffenamt
decided
on the latter
and the tank
was
ordered
into production
in 1937 as the
Panzerkampfwagen
(Pzkpfw)
III.
The
development
prototypes
were
fitted
the
3. 7 cm main gun and two machine
guns
and the armour
was of 15mm thickness,
which was able to withstand
any anti-tank
rifle then
in use.
