Bigfoot or a Bear

I saw a Bigfoot. Or I saw a bear. I dont know if I will ever know for sure. What I do know? It was scary and it was real. I have seen bears before. In fact, I have been much closer to a bear than this before. My father has always been an outdoorsman. Our family has been to numerous parks from Yosemite to Yellowstone. Because of his influence in our lives we are all pretty accustomed to being in the forest with wild animals. We have seen bears, moose, elk, bobcats, mountain lions, and more.

One night in August of 2009 my family was camping in Tahoe National Forest. My brothers girlfriend at the time was freaking out because she was afraid that a bear might come. I had also brought my girlfriend on the trip and she was getting frustrated at all the ruckus that they were making about bears so we decided to go on a short walk.

We didn't get more than 50 feet from the campsite before we decided to stop walking and just talked until things calmed down back at the campsite. We were talking about our plans for the next day, what we thought of today, and other things. We were there for about two to three minutes when a sound caught my ear. It is hard to explain it. But the best way to explain the sound is the sound of fingernails tapping on a hard surface. It sounded near, but I was about to be surprised. I turned my flashlight on and pointed it in the direction of the noise. Wham! There was a medium sized black bear standing four to five feet away from us!

Being an Eagle scout and having been camping a lot, I know you should not run from a bear as it can trigger an aggressive instinct in the animal. I backed away slowly keeping the light on the bear. However, my girlfriend turned tail and booked it back to our campsite screaming BEAR! BEAR! BEAR! BEAR! Having no choice but to run now I turned and followed her as well. I figured if the bear was going to chase her it was going to run over me or get me first anyway. She ended up running into my parents tent, tripping, while still screaming bear. I jumped on top of a campsite table and looked for the bear with my flashlight. While my brother and his girlfriend thought we were just joking and were irate, yelling at us. Needless to say, I am pretty sure we kept most of that campsite up into the morning hours.

So yeah, I have seen bears. They are not new to me. I am not sure exactly what I saw October 29 th 2012. It could have been a bear, or it could have been a Bigfoot. There was a lot of brush and trees between us and it which obscures the creature to much to really be certain. Here is the story of our encounter.

Camping

Winter is coming fast here in Provo Utah. My sister, my brother, my other brother and his wife, and I had been talking about going camping for a few weeks. With all of our schedules with school and other commitments it is hard to plan and actually do something. I teach SCUBA and write for work so I could pretty much go anytime. The others had to really work to make time. Because the weather was beginning to look bleak it gave everyone the motivation to actually get out and do it.

Monday was the perfect day. It was warm sunny and everyone agreed to an overnighter. We could get our stuff done earlier in the day, and then hit provo canyon for the night and be back the next afternoon or so. A perfect short get away. It was the first campout since my brother got married.

We drove up squaw peak and turned left at the fork that takes you to the campgrounds. We drove past those and continued up the road a few miles to a spot where there is a campsite that looks over Utah Lake, Provo, and Orem. The forest and mountains to the East and the cities and lakes to our west. It is a beautiful area.

We began setting up camp. My brother Bob and his wife Jennica have one of those pop up tents that already has the poles pre installed. You pull it out of the bag and you stretch it out and it basically sets itself up. I was looking forward to sleeping under the stars. We brought a few camping chairs and set those up while my brother Jared attempted to chop firewood for a fire. It was a good time and we were filming parts of the trip to document the first "new Robbison adventure.

As we were setting up I noticed some animals moving off in the distance on a slope. I walked over and couldnt tell whether they were deer or elk. They were a good distance away, I would guess at least three to four hundred yards to the North though so it was hard to tell for sure. I see deer all the time, almost hit them all the time with my car, so nothing to exciting. Elk are different. I wanted to get closer for some pictures. I quietly brought everyone else over and pointed out the deer. Everyone else agreed that we should hike over for a closer look.

To the North there is a forested area with two trails. One along the side of the mountain in plain view of the deer or elk, and one that runs through the middle of the forested area which would hide us from the deer. I had hiked this area before but hadn't been on this trail through the center of the trees. We decided on the one in the middle and began in the direction of the deer.

The Encounter

It is hard to recall what time it was at the time we started on the trail. But it was still pretty light. I would guess sometime after 5 P.M. We began walking through the wooded area. We didn't talk much as we didn't want to spook the deer. I love being in nature and one of the best parts of it for me is the silence and peace you can feel away from the cities. As we were walking we could hear quite noise. It sounded like something moving in the leaves. It was very quiet and hard to determine what it was. I stopped a couple of times to try to listen, but couldn't figure out what it was. So we just continued walking. I checked my .45 Long Colt revolver to make sure it was easily accessible, and then continued into the forest.

The trail came to a slight slope uphill and when we reached the top of the trail we looked to our left towards the noise and we could see a black animal behind some trees. We quietly moved back a little bit to put a little more distance between us and it. As I said earlier, it looked like a bear. In fact it looked like a small to medium sized bear in the trees just minding its own business like most bears do. We quickly got the camera going again and began filming it.

It didn't appear to see us quite yet so we continued filming. I was hoping it would shuffle into a clearer area so I could get some pictures and so my brother could get some better video but it just stayed in the one spot. I would estimate that we were about 45-60 feet away from the creature. It is hard to say though as all the brush makes it hard to tell distance. It was at this point, about a minute or so after we first saw the creature that it made a larger movement and stood up. As soon as it stood up, everyone began running. Again, I know I shouldnt have ran but the size of the creature was so immense that even if I had wanted to I couldnt have walked away slowly. There were some trees and branches between us and the creature, however I have seen bears run straight through large blackberry bushes and know that a bear could get to us through the trees like it was running through banners at a football game.

We ran for a few minutes. The adrenaline got us going and we eventually made it around the forest area and back to our campsite. The girls were freaking out, we were all freaking out about it, and we all decided it was probably best to split and not camp this night. I don't know how to explain the fear but we all grabbed the most important items and got out of there. We left most of our things. The tent, some of the chairs, and a few drinks. Nothing to important that I can remember. Most of the equipment there was my brothers so he might have a few more things to add to the list.
