Women of Southie: Finding Resilience During Whitey Bulgers Infamous Reign: summary, description and annotation

Women of Southie tells the story of six women, who grew up in and, in most cases, still live in their beloved town of South Boston, a place sadly and most notably recognized as the home of James Whitey Bulger, the organized crime boss captured in 2011 after 16 years on the run, and sentenced in 2013 to life in prison for 11 murders. But while Bulger might have been ruling the town with an iron fist, as depicted by Johnny Depp, in Black Mass, what the town ought to have been recognized for are the far braver women who ruled their own lives and their families with equally strong but far more beneficial hands. Six of these women are depicted in this book, each of whom faced hurdles more frightening than mobsters. Death of loved ones, suicide, murder, addiction, abuse, post traumatic stress disorder are some of the demons they faced. Yet, none of these women ever backed down from an important fight, each one emerging, on the pages of this book as a shining light of what love and courage and an indomitable spirit can accomplish.

The stories of these women, whose ages range from 40-67, are filled with honest details, some heartbreaking but all ultimately courageous and inspirational. Talking always honestly, about their children, their men, their losses, and their successes, they are shining examples that, in todays world, it is the words of strong women that offer the antidote to loss and pain.

PHYLLIS KARAS As a journalist and teacher of journalism I seek out headlines - photo 7
PHYLLIS KARAS
As a journalist and teacher of journalism, I seek out headlines that guide me to the stories I want to further investigate and write. For the small annex that sits south of Boston, affectionately called Southie by its residents, headlines abound. As Bill Gates once said, Headlines, in a way, are what mislead you because bad news is a headline, and gradual improvement is not. This could not be more true when it comes to the reputation of the City of South Boston. A plethora of headlines offer a panoramic timeline of a city scathed by everything from famine to infamy, with adulations of its rich history, unique culture, and grand people few and far between. In this way, the world has been misled by the headlines, a few of which follow, and, dare I say, denied the opportunity to know a deeper story about a town firmly entrenched in its heritage.

An influx of Irish immigrants fled their Motherland to escape the Great Irish Famine of 18451849. Many of the 37,000 Irish Catholics who arrived in Boston settled in South Boston, turning Southie into a predominantly middle-to-lower working class, Irish Catholic community.
WHITEY BULGER SIDEKICK RECALLS BLOODY 1960S BOSTON GANG WAR
By the 1950s and 60s, Southie was no longer an Irish Need Not Apply town; however, it now faced the emergence of an Irish mob headed by James Whitey Bulger. As the undisputed and feared boss of the South Boston Irish Gang, he sold drugs and cracked down on those who questioned his gangs control of the expanding drug market in the city. While some Southie residents chose to view Whitey as a Robin Hood character who protected them from harder drugs and more corrupt criminals, others saw him and his mob as murderers and bullies, fearing his name and making certain never to cross his path. His reign inevitably came to an end when, after sixteen years on the run, twelve of which he spent on the FBI Most Wanted List, Bulger was captured in Santa Monica in 2011.
