O ver 30 years ago, I heard Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, author of the groundbreaking book, On Death and Dying, speak to several hundred people in Louisville, Kentucky, about her studies concerning near-death experiences and her then recent studies on life after death. She described herself as a pessimistic Protestant before her studies on death and after-death experiences. She stated that since her research, she had become convinced without a doubt there was definitely life after death. This was a very powerful moment for me personally to hear one who was a psychiatrist by training make such a statement not based on faith, but on scientific research.

I experienced another powerful moment several months ago when Faye Aldridge, a person whom I had never met before, entered my office at the hospital and told me a story about her husband. Two doctors who work at this hospital had seen him after his death. It was an incredible experience for them, for her, and for her family. This experience led her to write a book about her husbands after-death appearance and similar experiences. She feels she received a special blessing from God and so do I. She wants to share this blessing with us.

This book is not research, but it does contain extraordinary stories, which have come from the mouths of those who have experienced these events. I hope this book will be a source of hope and peace as you read these words and reflect on the stories. Life is a mystery, but sometimes the mystery comes to us face to face to reassure us of the unknown. I applaud the work of Faye Aldridge and I hope this book will minister to those who read it.

Every once in a while, something happens to you that you just cant explain. You know, when all you can do is take pause or stand still in complete awethat night between 11:30 and 12:00, as I sat alone on the couch in my family room, something happened. Initially I was frightened and uneasy, only to be overcome, just as suddenly, by a sense of peace and calmness like I have never known before. There was a translucent form there, which I did not recognize. Then I heard a voice, which I had heard before, say, I have gone to Heaven to be with God. Dont worry about me, I am OK. I knew that voice. I didnt need to call the hospital to find out that Mr. Aldridge had gone on to be with God, just as he had said.

T he preceding paragraph is an excerpt from a letter written by Dr. Carl Willis, a Nashville oncologist. Dr. Willis was stunned when a deceased patient appeared in his living room and spoke to him. Later, he learned he was not the only physician who experienced an after-death appearance from Burke Aldridge.

My husband, Burke, had been under a physicians care for months; suffering from continuous pain had become a way of life for him, but the source of the pain remained a mystery. On a cold February night in 2005, I rushed him to the emergency room at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. His pain had reached an unbearable level and was accompanied by acute respiratory distress.

The emergency staff responded at once when they realized the severity of Burkes symptoms. His right lung had collapsed. Within minutes, the nurse started him on oxygen and administered an injection of morphine to lessen the severe chest pain. Burke was admitted to the critical care unit, a unit reserved for only the most life-threatening conditions.
