A straight-dope, tell-all account of touring with two of the worlds greatest bands of the 60s and 70sA fast-moving narrative of rock-n-roll excess (Publishers Weekly).
In this all-access memoir of the psychedelic era, Sam Cutler recounts his life as tour manager for the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Deadwhom he calls the yin and yang of bands. After working with the Rolling Stones at their historic Hyde Park concert in 1969, Sam managed their American tour later that year, when he famously dubbed them The Greatest Rock Band in the World. And he was caught in the middle as their triumph took a tragic turn during a free concert at the Altamont Speedway in California, where a man in the crowd was killed by the Hells Angels.
After that, Sam took up with the fun-loving Grateful Dead, managing their tours and finances, and taking part in their endless hijinks on the road. With intimate portraits of other stars of the timeincluding Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, the Band, the Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd, and Eric Claptonthis memoir is a treasure trove of insights and anecdotes that bring some of rocks greatest legends to life.

Every day

We murder our dreams;

Then pick them up,

Dust them down,

Adjust their silly hats upon their heads,

Kiss them on the cheeks,

And tell them how glad we are

That theyre still alive.

The sun was still up at Altamont, and the concert was already turning into a disaster. I tried to calm the crowd (with Michael Laing standing beside me), but the acid casualty lying on the ground in front of the stage speaks volumes. Note the height of the stage, which was a major factor in the chaos that was Altamont. ( Robert Altman)

After the show, the Rolling Stones returned to the UK, leaving me behind to clean up the mess. You can feel the desperation in the telegram I sent to Ronnie Schneider, which went unanswered. The Stones never paid me a cent back then and they havent paid me to this day. (Courtesy Ron Schneider)
