FOREWORD
Carole Nelson Douglas, my mentor, dear friend, and cat writer extraordinaire, had offered to write the foreword for Ghost Cats 2. For twenty-seven years, she mentored me. She advised me. She critiqued my work. In the twitch of a whisker, she was gone.
Carole started her career in journalism during the days of smoky, testosterone-filled newsrooms, when misogynistic editors believed women shouldnt cover hard news. She had to work twice as hard for twice as long, and the quality of her work had to far surpass that of her male counterparts. She was a trailblazer and a role model for women in journalism and publishing today.
Eventually she transferred her talents and skills to fiction, creating the Irene (she always pronounced it -rn-) Adler series tied to the Sherlock Holmes genre, and finally the Midnight Louie mystery series about a cat detective who talked to his readers and occasionally dogs, but never to the humans around him. Her first Midnight Louie book came out in 1992. The twenty-five-book series ran for the rest of her life. She wrote these always-catchy and original cozies at an average of one per year. At the time of her passing in October 2021, she had written an astounding sixty-four novels.
I met her by happenstance in 1994 at Galaxy Fair, a Dallas science fiction convention; she was classy, beautiful, and always dressed to the nines. Cat on a Blue Monday, her third Midnight Louie book, had just been released. She was at the con promoting it.
At the time, I was a reporter for a small-town newspaper covering local politics and events. My second article about cats had just appeared in Cat Fancy magazine.
She was so excited when I told her about my two cat articles that she immediately offered to sponsor me as a member of the Cat Writers Association. That was the beginning of a new life and career for me.
From that moment, she was there to guide me, answer my questions, and encourage me. She felt strongly about supporting other writers, but she was passionate about elevating women in the craft.
No matter how many of my articles and books were published, I always worried I was doing something wrong. And Carole was always there with a useful tidbit or comforting word.
Then, in October 2021, the world lost that sparkling jewel who was Carole.
