Introduction

Are you a fan of the modern generation of royals? How much do you know about the lives of Prince William, his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and the rest of the Royal Family? If youre a fan, then this is a great book which will give you fascinating information about royals both past and present. Separated into sections containing information on individual royals, traditions of the monarchy, kings and queens from history, and of course Queen Elizabeth II, you will find more than 100 amazing facts inside!

The Queen & Prince Philip

  1. It is customary for foreign dignitaries to give a gift to the queen when they visit - or on a special occasion (such as her silver, gold or diamond jubilee). A number of leaders have actually given Her Majesty animals throughout her reign - some of which she has had to place in the care of London zoo. These have included jaguars, beavers, sloths, giant turtles and an elephant. She has also been given a pair of cowboy boots, some pineapples and a box of snail shells.
  2. Despite that fact that the Queens actual birthday is on the 21 st of April, it is officially celebrated in June. The date chosen changes every year and is generally held on a Saturday so more people can join in the fun!
  3. The Queen is well known for her love of a breed of dog called the Corgi. Her Majesty has owned over 30 of these dogs and the first one was a present given to her as an 18 th birthday present. The dogs are exceptionally well cared for, and once a royal footman was demoted for giving one a tot of whisky!
  4. Incredibly, a security guard at the 1991 Royal Windsor Horse show didnt recognise the Queen, and denied her entry to a VIP area. One assumes that she did get in eventually...
  5. A special blend of tea is make specifically for the Queens garden parties which are a common event at Buckingham Palace. The blend is fittingly called Buckingham Palace Garden Party Tea.
  6. Despite the exceptional security measures one would expect at a royal residence, in 1982 a man by the name of Michael Fagan managed to break into the Queens bedroom at Buckingham Palace. All he said he wanted to do was have a chat with her. Her Majesty managed to summon help when the man asked her for a cigarette. Fagan was only ever charged with the theft of half a bottle of wine!
  7. Another immensely frightening incident had occurred the year before whilst during a ceremony known as the trooping of the colour, a man fired a gun six times at the Queen. Luckily it turned out that the bullets were blanks, however the attacker was subdued and charged with treason.
  8. The Queen and her husband Prince Philip were enormously fond of their royal yacht, Britannia. When - at the behest of the penny-pinching Labour government of the time - it was retired (and not replaced), the Queen was said to be so devastated she broke into tears. The ship itself was very personal to them, and Philip had amazingly been involved in every stage of the design when it was built in the 1950s.
  9. A keen gardener, Philip (who has the official title of the Duke of Edinburgh), has extensively remodelled the gardens at Balmoral (a royal estate in Scotland) over the years. He has taken particular interest in the water features, which he personally drove a bulldozer to model!
  10. The people of the Yaohnanen tribe in Vanuatu revere Prince Philip as a god, believing he is originally from their island, having been born from the spirit of a nearby volcano.

Prince William

  1. The Prince was born William Arthur Philip Louis on the 21 st of June, 1982 at St Marys Hospital in London.
  2. He was named after Charles cousin Prince William of Gloucester who sadly died aged just thirty, in an air-crash whilst flying his plane in a competition in 1972.
  3. Before Williams mother Dianas tragic death, she had expressed that she wanted her children to experience life outside the typical royal family - with this in mind she took them to places such as Disneyland and McDonalds.
  4. Once William had graduated from Eton, he took a gap year and for ten weeks he taught children in Chile. During this time he mucked in with other young teachers, fulfilling normal household duties such as cleaning toilets.
  5. In 2001, William enrolled under the name William Wales at the University of St Andrews in Scotland - where he was to meet his future wife.
  6. Whilst studying there, the Prince was referred to as Steve by other students to minimise any media interest!
  7. William graduated from University in 2005 with a 2:1 in Geography - currently the best degree of any heir to the throne of Britain and the Commonwealth realms.
  8. In October 2010, William and his then girlfriend Kate took a trip to Kenya to celebrate the Prince passing his RAF helicopter Search and Rescue course. Whilst there, William finally popped the question! Clarence House announced the engagement on the 16 th of November that year.
  9. William chose to give Kate his mothers ring to seal their marital vows. About this decision, he said Its very special to me, just as Kate is very special to me now. It was right to put the two together. It was my way of making sure my mother didnt miss out on today and the excitement.
  10. In October 2005, Kate complained about harassment from the media and in February 2006 it was decided she would receive 24-hour security. Many thought this was leading to an impending marriage proposal - however no such announcement happened. It is thought Kate was not granted an allowance to fund the security, until media attention rocketed around her 25 th birthday in 2007 prompting fears from Kates lawyers and Prince William.

Prince Harry

  1. Harry is truly a man of the people. When he had graduated from military academy Sandhurst, he begged to be sent to Afghanistan, an active war zone at the time (he was eventually given his wish). The Prince said Theres no way Im going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country.
  2. Brocades and Coronets was a title of a lullaby specially commissioned for Harry when he was born.
  3. Harry was once pictured by the press wearing a Nazi uniform, along with swastika armband - for a fancy dress party. This didnt go down very well with the rest of the Royal family.
  4. Despite being known as Harry, the Princes real name is Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales.
  5. On a tour of Belize, the Bahamas and Jamaica, Harry raced against Usain Bolt and was pictured doing the lightning bolt pose associated with the fastest man on earth!
  6. His longest relationship was a six-year on/off affair with society beauty Chelsy Davy. However the couple seemed to have split for good in 2010.
